Comprehensive wheel swap list?

I've searched for what wider wheels fit the fzs600 with minimal effort.
Now for the rear there seem to be a few, specifically thunderace, xjr1200 and so on. For the front because of the speedo drive I've only seen the trx850 and fzr400rr mentioned and then remember only the rr model.
So does anyone else know what else will fit? Does a thunderace front fit with the speedo drive? Surely a few other 90s Yamahas, perhaps the xjr1200 front wheel as well?
I'm not in a desperate hurry for wheels for my bike but the wider the model choice the wider I can cast my net... Its not like either of those bikes for the front option are common,  at least not in oz (although I've pretty much resigned myself to buying internationally and hoping shipping isn't too bad haha).
So yeah what do you all know?

Incidentally I mean swapping to a 17x5.5 rear and a 17x3.5 front.. Since I didn't make it clear above at all! :/

Looking at a photo of a Thunderace I'd say the front won't work because it looks like it has  conventional cable drive speedo. [Image: thunderace_1996-2001_czarno-srebrny.jpg]

The FZS front wheel is a cable drive wheel with the speedo drive head swapped from a cable drive head to an electronic head so don't rule out bikes just because they have cable drive

I was about to ask about that, I've not had a great long look at it but pretty much any wheel thay can take the two prongs of the drive head or be machined to take the two prongs would work right? Doesn't sound like a massive deal, but I guess it depends on what the other options look like!

The wheel spindle diameter / wheel bearing size is a major factor ruling out some of the wheels mentioned above.
The only ones I know that can fit, or more precisely be altered to fit, are the TRX850 and the 1994/95 FZR600R. I believe they both share the same front wheel design and are 3.5 inch wide, so can take 120/70 or 120/60 front tyres. I do suspect I have a spare TRX850 front somewhere in my garage ;-)
I think the Thundercat 600 front can also be bodged into position, but it has differences such as the inner section of the brake discs, so it may not be the same. The spindle diameter / bearing sizes are the same, tho.

Rear - again, spindle size is a main consideration, never researched the back but hopefully more choices.

Thundercat front wheel in mine (although it's T'cat front end!)
Was easy enough to file down the speedo drive plastic tabs slightly in order to fit and work, however break discs and hub dimensions are different so wouldn't say it would fit standard fazer forks!

As long as the rear bearings on the donor wheel are same size or bigger than the Fazer ones then making up new spacers would be very easy, i guess width is the main consideration since wider wheels are likely to have wider hubs as well?

When you say altered to fit for the TRX and FZR what needs changing? I was under the impression from what i'd read before that those two were bolt up options.


Most Yamahas of that era seem to have almost the same brakes as in blue or gold spots but there is a wild variation in the diameter and offset of the rotors between bikes?


Punkstig, you have a thundercat wheel on yours, but you're also running thundercat forks you mean?


Yeah the idea of changing the wheels is to run a 120 front and a 180 rear, my mate has been taking our track Fazer out with bigger tyres on it and apparently it's the shiz now.

I would suggest the better option would be to source new bearings with the correct inside diameter for the axle your using. That's what I've done with the KTM rear wheel on my project bike as the KTM bearing ID was something like 25mm but the EXUP swing arm I'm using uses a 20mm axle.

Yeah that's a good idea, especially since any donor wheel you'd want to be getting new bearings for it anyways.
Oh and the track bike, i thought it had a Thunderace rear wheel but it has a FZR1000 rear wheel on it.  I'll get details of the fitment and post it up here.  I believe the brake caliper bracket has to be 3mm thinner (my mate made a new one but if you have a spare and depending on where the material comes from perhaps the original one could be milled down).

Confirmed from my mate:


FZR1000 17x5.5 rear wheel, machined down the spacer between wheel and sprocket carrier 3mm.  Cush and carrier trimmed slightly.  Other side spacer stock.  Thinner caliper bracket made.


FZR400RR 17x3.5 front wheel.  Straight bolt up, no mods.

Speaking of Thundercats, my mate also has a Thundercat track bike, he tried the front wheel from that in the FZS and it doesn't fit.
The speedo sensor DOES fit, but the wheel itself is too wide, the Thundercat fork legs are further apart.

I'd guess with a wider wheel you've got a wider contact patch between the tyre and the road at every point. They also look cooler

Correct, hence why you need the whole front end for a wider wheel to fit!

My old house mate has an xjr1200 in the shed too... He's overseas for work but I'll get him to do some measuring when he's back too. I've seen an fz400 with an xjr1200 rear wheel online and a Trx850 front... I'm guessing the xjr1200 front is wide as well but worth a check.

Has anyone found any compatible front wheels that are more than 3 spoke? 3 spokes make me sad  :'(

I put a 120 wide front tyre on my existing fazer wheel, when it had done about 40K miles.
It's now done 79K miles and I've had no problems.
