Clutch failure when pulling off motorway

As I went up the slip road, there was no pressure on my clutch lever as I went to drop through the gears. Managed to slip into neutral and onto the side. 3 out of 5 bolts had at some point rattled loose and gone, and the remaining 2 were loose!
(Left side sprocket cover), so when I was trying to pull the lever, the casing was moving instead of moving the clutch.

Tightened up the remaining 2 bolts and was able to get home.

Where can I get these bolts??

Deefer666 may have some spare if he has a dead clutch in his shop. Ask him, he might have 'em cheaper.

I don't think the casing is meant to be a bearing surface... if I were you, I'd check your clutch (unless some wiser bod tells me that's normal).

If you've got a thread gauge you can check but at a guess they'll be M6x1 allen head bolts. I think one or two of them are longer than the others someone might be able to measure them for you

From memory i think 2 are longer than the other 3.

I am a wiser bod and that is normal

In that screwed to the inside of the casing is a thing on a cam that the cable pulls and the thing rises up a short arcemeedies screw type thing - this "rising up the cam then presses on the clutch rod - only by 8mm at max, so if the bolts are loose you dont get the 8 mm travel. as the cam thing is not pressing on the clutch rod. The movement needed to act the clutch is so small that when you refit the sprocket cover (you can do so without fitting a gasket) but may have to adjust the clutch to compensate,

Now then also unless it was you that has been doing stuff there then it could well be that the sprocket has been changed in which case then make sure it now the  with the new nut (im sure that you know about this )

2 of the 3 missing bolts have now been replaced from my collection of 'I'm sure this box of bolts will come in handy someday', not the most perfect matching lengths (washers have been put in for spacers) but will do for now, will order the correct ones from that really handy link further up the page (many thanks for that) tomorrow

My bad, I misread the OP! I thought dcurzon was talking about the clutch casing rather than the sprocket cover! My bad.  :o

Actually, i cant see one of the bolts in that link... #9 and #10 are 2 of the culprits, the other, is the one that goes in above the clutch adjusting blanking plate.

Might be only 2 listed because of the 2 different lengths, might need to phone them to work out which ones you need?

Happened to me in Europe last year, only noticed when breakdown man arrived about 5 miles from home.

5 bolts in total all Allen heads

4 are no 6 x 40mm  and the centre one at the rear of the cover is no 6 x 50mm

Can be picked up any suppliers of bolts. Bring an old one to get the correct thread. They are fairly standard

I called up an old race colleague who works at a yam dealers, he's sorting out the bolts, and some speedo assembly bulbs.  Job jobbed. Smile
