I think I'm on position seven or 3 depending which way the numbers start. Can somebody tell me which way the numbers on the rear preload start. Is 1 at the lowest point on the adjuster (the adjuster I'm referring to looks like steps) or at the top

Tells you in here 1 being the softest setting.

I know 1 is soft and 9 is hard. It just doesn't say which is position 1 and which is 9

Does it really matter?  call it 1 or 9 it's either one will be the softest or the hardest depending on your choice.
The manual works 1 as softest though Wink

I didn't think it was that hard a question. Perhaps I could have worded it better.


I have attached a lovely hand drawn picture of what my suspension adjuster looks like. The red dot, is that in position 3 or position 7? That's what I can't find in the manual - whether position 1 (softest) is the lowest (left hand) setting or the highest (right hand) setting.


Does this make sense? Does the numbering system start at the lowest point and work up, or start at the highest point and work down?

To make the question even clearer, does the numbering system in the manual work like option A or option B of the attached images?

Number 1 will be the lowest step and spring basically with no loading ie uncompressed. As the steps are climbed the spring is further compressed (preloading)

Option A

I realise it is probably a stupid question which is why it might have been read wrong. Just wanted to clarify as the manual says 1 is soft but without actually seeing any numbers on the adjuster.....

Just looked at your pictures ......adjusting the preload will make no difference what so ever.......with that spring  :rollin  :rollin  :rollin

The standard rear shock is shite anyway. Preload only affects the useable range of movement on the spring, not the tension of the spring itself.

Therefor I am now an expert and guru and am here to advise you all on everything to do with suspension from this point fourth.

I float between 65-70 kilos, but I found the standard scock soft and saggy. Maybe its how I ride, maybe mine was past its best. But it was shite. There are plenty owners on here have upgraded to an R6 shock or better. I am one of them. It is a sound investment if you like to explore the full capability of the machine.
Not quite sure what to do with my early mid-life crisis. Ideas on a post card to P.O.BOX 150...
