A good day to get a free bike wash...!!
#1
A word of advice to anyone thinking of taking the B2146 or B2141 on the Hampshire/ Sussex border area in the next few days: *DON'T*!

The first one is a river and the second one is a lake at the moment...

I'm going to be leading a Ride Out next Sunday, so, as the weather was fine, I figured it would be a good chance to check out the route. I'd looked on the web for details of flooded roads and nothing was marked on the ones I was planning on using and, indeed, everything was fine until I got to the B2146 just north of Chichester, when I came across a flooded section. It wasn't too deep, so I took it carefully and slowly and made it through without any problems.

Unfortunately then I came to another section. Again it wasn't too bad, but after that was a third section and half way through this one, the water was actually flowing! Of course it was too late to turn back by this point, so I had to carry on and then had to make a decision as to whether to turn back or continue.

I didn't fancy going back through those sections again, so cautiously continued, only to find another flowing section which was several inches deep (almost to the rim on my front tyre!). Fortunately, after that, I saw a couple of locals in a small village who told me that there was only one more section ahead which wasn't too bad.

They then said "Didn't you see the 'Flood' and 'Road Closed' signs?"

"What signs?" I replied.

"There's a couple over there," they said, pointing just behind me.

"Well there weren't any coming up from the south!" I replied.

Anyway, after that, I decided to check the B2141 as an alternative route, only to find that sections of that were flooded too. They weren't as bad, but at one point, whilst I was tiptoeing along at less than 5mph, following the dotted white line on the crown of the road to stay in the shallowest part of the water, I saw some idiot in a 4x4 coming belting towards the flooded section just ahead of me and I could tell that the pillock was going to come crashing into that water at speed, sending spray and waves all over the place, so I did the only safe thing and deliberately moved across onto his side of the road to block him from this at which point he winds down his window and starts yelling at me to get out of his way!

Fortunately all the other drivers and riders I encountered had had enough sense and respect for other road users not to drive like a total moron...

Anyway, I got home, gave the bike a proper wash, then phoned 101 and told them to get onto the Highways Agency and get them to put out some warning signs on these roads ASAP.

Take care out there, folks!

Too late! Went through one today. Fortunately, there were temporary traffic lights, so only one side allowed through at a time, and luckily, was able to filter to the front before they turned green. Well, quickly snicked 2nd gear, but speed at about walking pace - nevertheless, it got deeper......and deeper....and deeper! Eventually had a bow wave that put up a wall of water that actually went up over my head!  :eek
At one point, I could barely see the road, but luckily came through before sinking without a trace.
Pleased to say. my kit kept me dry underneath, and the bike didn't skip a beat, but carried on as if to say, "all in a day's work". You just gotta love  :faz s!
Course it's filthy now, but ACF'd underneath, so not worried.
Got detoured twice trying to find a crossing back over the Severn due to closed, flooded roads - looked like half of the total area I covered was under water. This is going to take some time to subside methinks  :\

I got away with any flooded roads... but only just...

Took a random road "just because" and consequently ended up on a single track road where the water level was at the verge of the road on both sides. Quite a sight to see all the fields as just lakes and be able to ride straight through the middle without any issues - the actual tarmac was mostly dry due to the sun as well

There you go, why bother braving adventure rides like Euan and Charlie when you can have the same sort of excitement so close to home.
