MT-09 Just arrived in my local Stealer
#41
I'm beginning to think that my only real issue with the MT-09 is that every other bugger is going to have one as well Tongue

I kinda like having obscure vehicles as such - the FZS600 is a bit of a step away from that but I know very little about the motorcycling world Tongue

Must admit it does look good, but I'd be focced with the tank range.
I can hit reserve after 80 miles on me FZ1, reserve runs dry around 26 miles too, so with 4 litres less in the tank I'd be stuck in a forecourt a LOT!
I need to refuel at least twice a week on 'Bee as it is whilst commuting, reckon I'd be every day and a half in this wee fella.

Still, through a bigger tank and some more cubes at the engine, I'm definitely sold!

It'll be interesting to see what it's like at a constant ton on the motorway. Then the guy in the Astra van getting out of the way and snapping the throttle open to leave him behind?

All this talk of the MT-09 which I think looks like an excellent bike has just led me to the MT-01 and 03 which I had never even heard of. The MT-01 is quite possibly the most badass looking and sounding thing I have ever laid eyes on other than the old V max! If it were my money I think I would get a 2nd hand one of them instead and go and tear myself off some small continent with the torque that thing has. Utter beast! New addition to my dream bike list I think.

That's on my bucket list bikes. I need to trawl the dealers and get myself a go on a few bikes that I've always liked but would never buy?

I popped on over to CMC Clay Cross to have a look at one yesterday. It very much feels like sitting on my old F800GS, perfect angle on the seat/handlebars/footpegs  for comfort for me. Their demo has done 800 and something miles and the mpg readout is 53.2mpg which is great saying it's been hammered on the throttle as folks take it for a blast.
I'm known locally for getting the max mpg out of bikes (tight arse) so they want me to take it out for a couple of hours to see if I can get it into the 60's (my 800GS was up in the 80's riding how I ride  :rolleyes )

If it does then the 14 litre tank will be enough for 90% of the people out there !. It won't be a popular touring bike even with the comfort seat, rack/topbox and pannier rails and bags they have in the marketing blurb and now on-line too. It's light beyond belief, fully fueled up you can move it about one handed, picking it up off the sidestand. No centre stand which is a downer for me and always on my list of must haves on all my previous bikes.

I'll get back to you on the test ride report as and when. Big Grin

Today was the dry day to go bike testing  :b

I can say it's pretty hard to fault the MT I took out today. It had the little screen on and the touring seat, which might help the comfort a touch. The mode offerings are just a gimmick, cant really see the point of them, even in soft B mode the bike pulled up hills in fifth whereas my 1000 would be down to third on some of the lanes I was on.
Weight feels like half of what my gen 1 is and makes it a delight to move around.

Here's the best bit... these roads are ones I use often so I ride them the same no matter what bike I'm on. My bike would be doing 45-50 mpg on the same day at the same temperature, the MT was doing 68.1mpg, so even with a little 14 litre tank it can break 200 miles to a tank. I took it back to the dealers and they were most happy that their new bike, not fully broken in yet achieved that figure.
The $1000,000 question is "would I buy one " ?

YES, for sure, but you can't help but think this peach of an engine will get used in and even better frame with longer travel suspension before too long, and that would be the bike for me !

Go test ride one, it's a really good bike, honest.

I sat on one today , I like the looks especially the stubby exhaust , it was comfortable but i'm only 5 foot 8, if your taller I reckon it would feel cramped , I don't think the small tank is an issue as I wouldn't want to go touring on it , to me its more a hooning around on a weekend kind of bike , I was gonna enquire about a test ride , but when I got off it the seat was covered in dust from my work trousers so I made a quick exit .

Agree with the comment about the pictures - its not exactly a great looking bike, but it seems to look better in reality than it did in all the art and marketing shots

Nice pic and interesting MPG figures.
I'm waiting to see what else they use it in too. A decent 1/2 fairing on the bike as it is would suit me. I wish they would announce now whats in the pipeline instead of this wait and see game.

If there are indeed other versions of this in the pipeline, I think they'd be daft to announce them so soon after this bike hits the streets, as a lot of people might then change their minds about buying the current version and wait to see what else comes along. Also, hanging back will give them time to check what kind of feedback this one gets, and perhaps help them to make any changes they then feel are necessary to improve sales on future models.

There is the Suzuki V-Strom in the shops soon, thats got my interest, but its a fair bit more dosh.

A few more points I forgot to mention.

With it being a naked bike there was a lot of wind hitting my knees, far more than my fazer or F800 come to think of it.

It has an idiots kill switch (sprung loaded)

The mirrors are crystal clear and vibe free, such is the smoothness of the engine.

The digi-display does not reflect hi-viz back at you so you can actually see the neutral and indicator warning lights (Gen 1 trait and hi-viz wearing bod that I am ).

It has the lowest dipstick in the world, and the worst seat lock position ever ( it's under a cap beneath the rear mudguard).

I had no shoulder/arm/wrist ache after a constant 2 hours of riding ( I said it fitted me well in the showroom seat test).

Yamaha have followed BMW and Triumph and made everything an extra, where I would expect it to be standard fitment (flyscreen, radiator side covers for example).

There is space under the seat on the non-ABS bikes just behind the tank where the unit would have gone that could be useful storage.

The standard Dunlop tyres would never be my 1st choice of rubber but they didn't step out of line at all on the muddy lanes I was on.

No vibrations through the pegs or bars at any rpm wearing the same gloves as I always wear (this has got to be a miracle  8) )

I could have ridden it all day given a larger bladder (CMC's cafe has big cups and should not be taken lightly)

It sounds like I've talked myself into getting one, as I liked so much of the ride today, (the Mrs is OK with it too as long as my Fazer gets sold first) if you order one now you might get it for January  :eek seems everyone wants one too !

Out of all the bikes I've ridden, it's the only one I've ever thought of buying new, it really is  that good:Smile
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

PC, Akrapovich and a suspension upgrade would perhaps turn it into a truly awesome machine by the sound of things. Although the look still doesn't really do it for me, the red/black one in the Cycleworld article isn't so bad imo.

Speaking of which---- thems that have had a test ride, or on other bikes, what deposit or insurance excess did you have to pay the dealer befor the ride, and if you bin it is that lost.
