harder wearing rear tyre

ive got maxxis supermax on my bike front and back and the rear has squared off till there is no rubber left. theve only covered around 3500 miles. i cant really aford to get a new tyre every 3500 miles so whats a good tire that will last longer that isnt ridicilously priced? i mainly use the bike for commuting and the odd trip on the motorway.

I had that with the Supercraps too.

Punkstig swears by the Michelin Pilot Road 3s. Pricier to buy, but cheapest per mile so he claims.

Unfortunately, I crashed my bike with barely 1000 miles on the tyres (the PR3s), so can't really comment!!

Punkstig's a courier, he rides the bike constantly, i treat his advice as gospel, who else exactly are you s'posed to ask for genuine feedback?

I've done over 12k miles on Pr4s so far and its looking good for another 5k at least. Mostly motorway riding.

As above, I've had 3 PR3 rears and minimum has been 15000 miles- that's with similar use to yourself, motorway riding/ commuting / well, travelling the country!
In the wet they truly are inspiring, although I believe reports put Metzelers as doing better, but that would be on a track at higher lean angles than we will do on the roads!
PR3's are worth the extra £'s!



I'm a bit of a test monkey though as I do like to try new things (I'm not talking ball gags and latex FYI) currently I have the new Bridgestone T30 and have only done a couple of thousand miles so far so cannot confirm mileage life yet!


Front tyres I've always been happy to mix as I prefer a 'grippier' front, S20 was last one and lasted 9-10,000 miles, which for me wasn't enough, buuuut, it was a very very nice grippy tyre!

Just to confuse matters, its also my beliefs that the PR2’s are the same compound, so in theory should give same mileage, the only difference in the PR3’s is the extra sipes which aids wet weather riding.
If money is an issue then the PR2’s will be cheaper!

I had 13k out of my rear PR2 before a puncture killed it, I reckon another few k would've been fairly easy before it got to the wear indicators.  The front was replaced at 21k and was on the indicators.  I replaced them with another set of PR2s, great tyres

ime running contis at mo and there great!!...most of the time its how you look after your tyres that makes them last!!..correct pressures etc..chkd minimum every week ,and obviously the way you ride!!..all contribute!...personaly i dont think that thers a lot between any of them?...what i think you do find though is the grippier the tyre you have the more you seem to abuse it?...

This might put some of you off going for a thou (if you were thinking about it, that is!). 5500 miles on rear PR2 and now on the wear bars... :\
But enjoyed every mile, and hell, that's what I buy a bike for! 3 days in Wales from tomorrow, fit new PR2 at £132 fitted and balanced next Wednesday. (180/55/17 on the thou of course). Should last a bit longer this time as winter approacheth!
Might try PR3s next year, as the rear would only have been £13 dearer.

I only got 6500 out the rear of the contimotions and not much more out the front, don't get me wrong they were nice tyres and whenever the rear let go it was controlled but I wouldn't have them again with what else is out there, plus I got them for free at the time so not complaining!
