Exhaust Help !

Took my downpipes off to get the balance pipes welded up and painted as they were starting to leak.........but can I buggery get them back on !  Is there a knack to it ?  Any advise (constructive ) will be gratefully recieved. :thumbup

I usually end up sat on the floor and put my foot under the downpipes to use it to keep them elevated whilst I negotiate getting the 4 headers into the head and at least one of the flanges screwed in slightly.

can be a pain  :\  DEADEYES method works for me too.......how much welding did you have done,if its lots the heat could of twisted the pipes

They should fit straight on no problem if they dont then they either been twisted/bent by an impact or when they were welded by too much heat!

I had to put the whole system back on my Fireblade last week. I ended up using a car jack to support the bottom of the downpipes while I got it all in place. Fiddle, but it worked.


I put a replacement set of downpipes on the Fazer last year and they went on fine. It could be they have been distorted by the heat from the welding or they might just need some 'encouraging'.

Thanks for the advice men.  I got it put back on after a lage amount of swearing, and a small amount of logical thinking ! I loosely cable tied where the rear of the the down pipe bolts to the frame, this gave me the aproximate angle it should go in at.  As it turns out they had warped a fraction, but a trusty old hammer handle helped persuade them in to place by eeking them apart slightly.  Once you get one bolted in the rest you can gently persuade.  I took the the bike for a quick spin over the mountain (I live in the Isle of Man  ) to get them warmed up and help cure the high temp. paint.  Nothing fell off and the bike ran perfectly, no more popping when you come off the throttle because of the holes in the balancers.
