To hopefully put your mind at rest you could see what a few other bikes feel like when on a centre stand and rocking the back wheel. (Best to ask permission first or you might get attacked :o ).
I know you said it didn't do it before the sprocket change, which is a bit worrying, but it is easy to kid yourself when you become super sensitive to a possible problem.
Good luck.
Just for the record, i've just been outside and given the bike a bit of TLC on my week off, and gave the rear wheel a good rocking back and forth and can report there was no play at all.
My bike's just touched 40,000 miles on the clock.

Yeah I will have a look with at my xj600 in the same situation. Its eniterely possible that its been there the whole time and im just noticing it now.

DOH!!!
No it wasn't :rolleyes
I'll have another go when i get a minute.........but the bike does look all nice and shiny now if that helps at all? :lol

lol you scared me there for a second.
It does help, Last weekend I gave mine a nice wash and covering with ACF 50. I highly reccomend diluted muck off on a spray bottle!
It's all a bit pointless 'cos they're still gritting the roads around my way, so as soon as it rains it'll be covered in shite again.

True, thats where the ACF50 comes in, all the crap sits on this layer of oil, so when you go to clean it again, it nice and shiny and not corroded
If the chains adjusted correctly, only two things I can think of:
Check the rear wheel doesn't move at all (as in from side to side, or front to back physically). Basically that the bearings are fine, and the spindle is done up properly with the adjusters both the same.
Check the rod the front sprocket nut bolts onto, and make sure there's no play in it at all.
Mine was rough at tick over and slow speed until I balanced the carbs and this made things a lot smoother, have you checked yours recently? It could have been getting worse for a while but you've only just noticed it. Good luck.

Mine isnt rough on tickover, its pretty stable, but I have never checked the carb balancing.
It could be that, but I suspect my clutch cable is pretty worn, so Im going to change that first and see if its gets any better. If not then I will get the carbtune out

No play in the rear wheel bearings or swingarm bearins, all bolts done up correctly
I havent checked for any lateral play in the output shaft, so will check that soon. Thanks.
I've just been out on the bike and before i put it away i had it up on the centre stand and rocked the rear wheel back & forth, and the play in 1st and 2nd gear was 1cm.

1cm , ok so pretty close to mine, which is probably about 2 cm.

Well, sort of, in a "not really" kind of way!
That's quite a difference as far as play is concerned, although i have no idea what the limits are supposed to be?

hmm true
meh, duno whats up with it!
Right, i've just been reading a different forum about this issue, and one fella checked 3 bikes for play and they were between one inch, and one and a half inches.
So, on that evidence alone i would pretend that we never had this conversation, and everything is present and correct, because both our bikes have less than an inch of play which sounds good enough to me.
He was checking a Blackbird and 2 x FZR1000's i think?

I think that its normal as well and we are all really paranoid.
I just went out on my XJ600 (1991) as the fazer is missing its broken bits from the fall, and there was no drivetrain shunt on the xj, although the clutch does drag badly on that.
I would say its a characteristic on the bike, and that balancing the carbs would help tremendously, as would checking all the engine mount bolts etc.
All those are things I havent done yet
I had my carbs balanced a few months back, it makes a huge difference at low speed, my bike was very jittery before having them done, although i was told one carb was quite a way out for some reason?

That will be next step then. Have to save up for a vacuum gauge!
