It comes down to statistics and cost.

1. Statistics
Our webspace host claims 99.9% uptime. This means that in every day we could have 14½ minutes downtime. Given that we have much less than this, we're doing well.

2. Cost
Our webspace costs a fiver a month - if we want 100% uptime it would be considerably more, for which we'd have to pass around the hat. For the amount of downtime we have I can't see it's worth the hassle.

Hmm... how do they define downtime?
I wouldn't say the site is down... just flakey. I can access some areas, but have had repeated error messages when trying to reply to another post.
Doesn't seem like that equipment replacement thing they did a couple of weeks back has made any difference. Sad

Farjo, just being picky but SLA's are something I deal with every day.

99.9% uptime = up to 1.4 minutes a day downtime.
99.99% uptime = upto 52.5 minutes a YEAR downtime
and for teh real fussy b@stard customers, 99.999% uptime = no more than 5.3 minutes a YEAR downtime.

If we aer paying for 99.9%, they are failing their SLA and we (you) should be compensated.

not as bad as Internal searches, don't know what made me think of that, must be watching too much daytime TV.

"99.9% uptime = up to 1.4 minutes a day downtime." Thanks - I must have divided by 10 instead of 100 perhaps.

So how often is this happening? The site is always up when for me apart from last night. Is this happening more frequently?

When I saw Tori's post I'd not had a problem since the spell a while back when we often had to ask twice for a page. I thought someone had resurrected the old thread... and then discovered it was happening again. Had to reload pages to get them instead of the error message several times this morning and it took about 4 attempts to post a reply to one... but I was still able to open other pages, it's not like the site is down, it seems like the same old random gremlins we had months ago have come back.

On the cost issue, presumably you're funding this out of your own pocket? I feel kind of awkward if you're not only spending time administering the site, but spending money that could be could be going towards sorting out your own bike. Have you asked for contributions to help keep it going or do you reckon we're all too tight/poor for it to be worth asking us to chip in? Alternatively, would people object to a bit of advertising? It's nice having the site clear, but a side banner or two might not be too obtrusive.

I'd happily contribute now and then, to keep the site ad-free. This was how it worked (from the outside anyway) on the old Yukky site, and we didn't seem to have any issue getting people to put a few quid in. I only recall the request going out once in all my time on that old site, and I was happy to bung a few quid in (I think a tenner).

Notwithstanding that, an opportunity presents; Farjo, the work you put in is very much appreciated, cheers fella :thumbup

I'll be happy to set up a DD for a proportional contribution.
