Fuel smell

I've got my bike stored temporarily in my conservatory as I had to take the fairing off and work on the instrument cluster to fix the faulty LCD odometer display (all sorted now).


There is a definite smell of fuel. There are no fuel leaks or anything showing on the bike, its completely dry.


After I fixed the odometer I started it to check the tacho function and it backfired. I had turned the ignition on and off quite a few times whilst I was fault finding on the instruments. Assuming the ticking noise when you turn it on is the fuel pump, so maybe just overfuelling?


The fuel smell was there before I did the work on it though.


So anything to worry about?

I am warm conservatory, the fuel in the tank will expand and also give of vapour which will vent through the vent pies from the tank. It is doing what it is designed to do.
Another ex-Fazer rider that is a foccer again

Thanks. Its my first bike so wasnt sure. If i turn the fuel tap off im guessing it will still vent? Wife doesnt like the smell!

Quick update, turned the fuel tap off, started it up but it keeps idling. Left it for about 4 minutes and was still going. Tried exercising it a few times but it looks like the valve isnt working,


Where is the best place to order a replacement one?

It takes about a mile on my bike to run out after turning the tap off (dont ask how I know)

It will take more than a few minutes idling to do the same.
Another ex-Fazer rider that is a foccer again

Agree with the above.
Also after filling up with diesel it takes about two miles before the engine notices. (Don't ask how I know).

Pump, fuel line/s and float bowls contain approx 250ml so 4mins isn't a surprise.  To check the tap, turn it off and disconnect the hose, some fuel will push back out the hose so be ready for that, but if no fuel comes out the tap, it's working.  Wink
