Graphite exhaust gasket vs. original fibre gasket
#1
Hello,

I've picked up a 1999 FSZ600! It was fitted with a Scorpion racing silencer which was far too loud so I decided to fit the standard exhaust the previous owner included in the sale.

When I removed the Scorpion silencer I noticed that it didn't have a gasket - just a tightener round the outside; it didn't need a gasket as it was a completely snug fit.

When I inspected the original silencer I noticed it had a kind of fibre/wire type gasket fitted inside. Unfortunately, when I went to fit this to the downpipe it deformed the old gasket, so I had to remove it. It was clear once when the old gasket was removed that there's quite a gap between the standard silencer and the downpipe, and the tightener is in no way sufficient alone to seal the two.

I thought no problem I'd simply buy a gasket. I bought one off eBay and was surprised when it arrived that it was a graphite gasket. I tried to fit it but although it will go over the downpipe, it is slightly too big to fit inside the exhaust to any depth. I ended up breaking it trying to install it in the exhaust and got a really poor fit with the remains that I was able to use - it blows somewhat in at least one area.

I ordered a different gasket from eBay from a different supplier, it was supposed to be a wire kind, but I was a sent yet another graphite gasket! The seller agreed to take it back explaining it was drop shipped from a factor/store however try as I might I cannot seem to find a replacement wire or fibre gasket from any supplier anywhere!

What should I do? I can't seem to make the graphite type fit into the completely standard exhaust to go over the downpipe without making a hash of it, but at the same time I cannot find to buy an original fibre or wire type gasket.

What should I do? Is the graphite gasket the only choice? If so, why doesn't it fit? Have I misunderstood how it's supposed to work?

Are the original fibre gaskets still available anywhere?

Any advice gratefully received, thank you.

Oh I see. Have you had any experience in fitting one? Why isn't it apparently straight forward?

Is the exhaust can side that's to small fir the gasket to fit in to? If so loosen the clamp as far as posdible  and widen the pipe until the gasket fits. Make sure the downpipe side is dean of all the old gastet

Yes it's the exhaust can side that's too small (only just too small). I'm conscious that it tapers even smaller quickly inside the can so even if I can take some mole grips to it and manage to widen it, the gasket will not seat a long way into it.

I'll have another go this weekend.

The exhaust can pipe can be tricky to clean properly and can look clean but it's polished surface of graphite.  Attack it with wire bush or file and you might get a lot more off.

I think the original gasket on mine was compressed wire mesh but all the replacements have been graphite
