Re Waterproofing Your Gear

Hiya fellas,

Right- got totally soaked through on Friday in my textiles apart from my TCX boots. My Furygan Jacket and trousers and Racer Titan gloves used to be good but totally failed in the heavy downpour. Yeah, I've got over jacket/trousers wet set but they were in the other bike  :groan

What I've done - washed them through to get the crap out then re washed using a triple dose of the Nikwax wash in stuff. Then sprayed 3 times with the Nikwax direct spray on. The gloves will have to do until I order some Richa Cold Protect GTX or others.

Now - have I wasted my time due to Nikwax being shite and/or is there some better product out there that is dependable.

Any advice, as always, appreciated fellas so teach me  :lol

Same here except my TCX boots leaked which ones do you have? Mine are none goretex "waterproof" ones. :'(

These people came to my work a few years back to show off their product, it really was quite impressive, especially when he lobbed his iPhone in a bucket of water!
I took a simple thin tissue that he treated which i still have now, and with cupped hands i can carry half a pint of water with it without it leaking or breaking apart, and it's permanently reusable.


At the time he was charging about £40 to treat mobile phones, with a one day return guarantee so as not to cause you any problems by having no phone.
I asked about bike equipment and he said anything could be treated within reason.

That Ultra Ever Dry looks good stuff. Could have done with a drop of that on Friday when we played Foot-golf in the pouring rain :'(. If it can perform over 18 holes of wading through the wet rough it would be pretty impressive (which is more than can be said of my ball control :lol).

Gtechnic I1 is what I use - no complaints about it, although TBH I am never really out in rain.

Got the TCX infinity (Goretex) - blinding boot, never leaked once and on my 2nd pair.

Tried the Ulta Dry but didn't seem to work for me. As for my ball control they were like yoyo's going up and down with the cold water running over them  :lol

Do you live in a hard water area? only time I've had issues with nikwax was when I was somewhere that was. I use wash in rather thaan spray on though. If the membrane gas gone though it's of limited use.

That's interesting Andy because I do live in a hard water area. Used wash in (triple dose) and spray on as belt n braces. There wasn't an inch from boots up that was dry. Gear is 2 yr old and not a separate membrane. Will look into Nikwax and hard water. Cheers.

Have a Hein Gericke goretex textile jacket & matching trousers bought 2005. Every winter (because I dont ride Nov-Feb) I remove the protectors and machine wash using Nixwax techwash (soft water area where I live so only need to use recommended amount per wash). Hang garments to drip dry and then while still damp spray on the nikwax waterproofer spray. The only rain that gets anywhere is the lower outside pockets. The top pockets(external) and inside one are totally waterproof. Summer gloves get soaked througheventually like last Wednesday caught in cloudburst between Ludlow & Worcester. funnily enough the boots which are Frank Thomas £69 basic ankle boots remained totally waterproof even after going through some pretty deep puddles from rainwater running off fields.
I never regretted paying for the Hein Gericke after previously getting caught out with some so called "bargain" shite. When you are wet through to the underpants & theres litres of water slopping around in your boots-you understand the meaning of "demoralisation" :lol

Quality of my gear is certainly something I've been thinking about Dave. Seen as I ride all year round, spending a grand on Rukka jacket & trousers with a 5/6 yr warranty is starting to look a fairly sensible approach.

I don't think not washing or re-proofing the gear for 2 yrs has helped much to be honest. On the plus side they feel very soft now, smell better  :lol  and will have to see how they perform in the next downpour. If they fail again soon then they're getting relegated to dry weather riding.
