Some advice on brakes for FZ1

I posted last week that I had a problem with my right side ffront Caliper photo attached. I thought I would check out the left side and the rear as well. All fecking slack been riding a death trap. Not happy I had new front pads fitted in April that garage is going to get a rocket.
I am better at maintaining rather large marine engines than FZ1's I have attached several pic's of the rear caliper as well.
I assume there is only 1 securing bolt for the rear caliper?? In the pics I am pointing at 2 bolts , top one by the bleed nipple is the securing bolt for the caliper? yes? and the other one seems to have a rubber type boot/ Is that a balancing valve for the rear ABS??? and really no need to touch this?
The top one by the bleed nipple was backed off about 4 turns, am I correct to assume that this should should tight/ I have tightened it up hard. Again I have checked the caliper assume there should be a certain amount of float/movement if you grip it and twist back and forth.
Any advice apprecated. I am going to get the bike to a dealers and get the thing checked over, not a lot of confidence in the thing now. Not good to find out the brakes are falling off the fecking thing when two days ago I had her batting along flatout.
What is really pissing me off is I had this bike serviced and MOT'd by Marriotts of Birkenhead the day before I rode her all the way down to Spain. I will be dropping them an email, makes you laugh though this bike just passed the Spanish version of the MOT last week after I had fitted a new EU headlight. All MOT's would appear to be a waste of time.

How many loose bolts were there mate?

it might seem unlikely, but I've had caliper bolts loosen off on me before, and I personally torqued them up before hand. All I can imagine is that as I didn't replace the caliper mounting bolts (which deform slightly when you tighten them up), they loosened off from engine vibrations.

Both bolts are to secure the caliper.  The rear caliper has 3 anti rattle shims, 2 behind the pads and one where the pads tough the caliper body at the 'front' end.  The two bolts have 12mm and 14mm heads and both have rubber seals to prevent ingress.

I know some will disagree with this, but I always use copperslip to prevent electrolytic corrosion of the threads, and I tighten them up pretty tight.  The fronts should be good and tight.

The workshop amnual says:

27nm front caliper bolts.
22nm rear caliper bolts.

Look in the service manual for what bolts and torque values.
This isn't hard if you can fook about with marine engines!

Seeing as you feel the need to post the same thread in both the general & thou forums I shall reply in both:


It's your bike, your life, your responsibility. There's no point passing the blame onto others or bleating about what's happened,  accept it as a warning & in future take a more pro active role in the bike's maintenance. You don't need an engineering degree to check the tightness of nuts, bolts & fasteners.
The front caliper holding bolts should be torqued to 29ft/lbs & coated with blue loctite. The rear caliper bolts to 20ft/lb &16ft/lb & again coated with blue loctite.
Tightening them to "hard" isn't recognised as an acceptable measurement.

Thanks for the replies obviously have got up the nose of one or two responders seeing as I did post once in General and then again in FZ1 corner for which I apoligise. I have checked the torque settings in the book but as yet do not have a torque wrench, hence the term HARD.
Yes as stated it is my life and I do actually check the bike over on a regular basis, but as said the bike was serviced back in late April and new pads fitted obviously the said garage did not torque to the factory setting so think I was entittled to have a moan. So tell me DekF how often do you check the securing bolts on your bike? as I stated I do not have a lot of expierence regarding Motorcycle maintainence, would that be every time you go out for a ride or once a month, or perhaps at the service intervals. I thought that was the general rule and why servicing schedules were in place.
