The henry hoover (for dirty jobs) stopped working.  My multimeter skills show the suppressor has failed so there is a short across Live and neutral (hence blowing the fuse).  A new one is gonna be £20. 


Can i just take the suppressor out the circuit?  I understand that it would give interference on the TV and radio (I can't hear them when I'm vacuuming anyway!)






I'm a bit loath to pay £20 for a spare part as there are other things that are gone too (the carbon brushes and exhaust filter) so the total repair bill is looking like £50. A new one is £70 so not worth it!


If I can get away with just removing the suppressor then I might be able to finish the building work - then I won't need a 'dirty' vacuum so can bin it.






So if I remove the suppressor am I breaking any rules? Will all the neighbours off the local substation have cocked up TV?  Will I have to get a new 'dirty' vacuum to clean out the loft?  Will the substation explode?  Will it stop the fazer starting?

Get yourself down to your local bootfair, you can get a secondhand working one for 5 to 10 quid

Yes, it'll run without the capacitor, though it'll probably annoy the neighbours.
That's a ridiculous mark-up for the component, admittedly they've also soldered a 2p resistor across it too, but £20 does seem a bit steep.

Try RS , I bought a capacitor from there about a month ago for less than a fiver .

Maplin for £1.50, that one looks the same spec I think...would need confirming though.

How much would it annoy the neighbors - and how far?

Confirmed this morning that it does work so I was correct is isolating the fault.  Looks like I could use the generic components linked above.  Can't say that I liked that it was wired in before the switch (so constantly active when the unit is plugged in and the wall socket is on).

Too many variables to predict how far the interference will radiate, I'd give it a new suppression cap... if you've a Maplin to hand that replacement Buzz found looks fine.

Thanks all for your help.  The Maplin by work had that resistor in stock.  I'll wire it up (and clean the vacuum filter too).
