I went to Prague with a group of friends in Dec 2010 for a long weekend

Really enjoyed it. Its a very pretty city and I would definitely call it safe. My friend "accidentally" booked a hotel in the middle of the red light district but there was never any "unsavory" types around that I ever saw. We went out on a pub crawl one night and were warned by the organisers that any shouting in the streets would land you the equivalent of a £100 fine from the local law enforcement

Food was good as well and fairly cheap which is always a plus Smile

I always prefer to do the whole sight seeing / walking around cities during the winter as I find it more appealing - less crowds of tourists and roasting yourself in the ridiculous sun. For that weather I prefer to lie on a beach and relax ^^

Great city - dead cheap as long as you go off the beaten track a bit. Love the people who can't be more welcoming. I stayed in the prison President Havel was imprisoned. Bit of history, new experience and £12 a head. Try the dark beer local vely stuff. I went withe the Mrs which was very civilised and then a stag do - sodom and gomorroh has nothing on Prague's underbelly.

I went with  the missus about 6 years ago for 4 or 5 days. Stayed on Satropramen Str, just along from the brewery. We managed to take in a football game at the Toyota stadium, bought some art, visited the sights, drank beer and ate well and I don't recall it being expensive. One of the airports is quite a bit from the city. Not much interaction with the locals, but those we did speak to were nice enough. At no point did I feel unsafe or anything like that, but then I have been in some rough towns in my time. The food was good and quite similar to German food, although maybe not quite as nice. We had always planned to go back, but not done so yet. Deffo would though
Not quite sure what to do with my early mid-life crisis. Ideas on a post card to P.O.BOX 150...

Great place, especially in the build up to Christmas. The dark beer is definitely worth sampling a glass or two.  Smile

Prague is fantastic. The main old city is fairly compact so you can walk from one side to the other easily.
We went back in 2003, fly drive for the MotoGP in Brno. End of July/early August so really hot and busy with tourists.
The castle was fantastic. The fortified walls contain a church and small village.
We stayed a couple of days when we got there, then toured down to Brno. We stayed at an apartment booked via an agency, it was about a mile out of town and very cheap, it felt safe enough walking back from the town at night so didnt bother with taxis/trams.
We left at 5:30am to get the taxi for the airport, shut the apartment door and pushed the keys through the letterbox as instructed, got downstairs and the front door was deadlocked, we needed the keys to get out  :\
Felt a right twat having to wake one of the neighbours. Looking at the names on the letterboxes another apartment had the same name on it, so hoped the flat we rented was theirs as well, so woke them up.

Like Dead Eye, I like these places in winter away from the crowds. Vienna is a good short stay break, easy to get to from its airport. Its a bigger place, but has an excellent metro. I combined it with a 2 night stop in Bratislava, 1 hour away on the train. Small old town, but very atomspheric, and beautiful women, everywhere. January, and cold and a little rain/snow but uncrowded.
On another trip I combined Vienna with Budapest, 3 hours on the train. Impressive city, still has a lot of original stock on its metro by the look of some of it. Amazing old open air pool with water at 28c, locals playing chess. That was in March 2011 and had fantastic weather, like the UK had that spring.

As with all big cities, watch out for pickpockets. Otherwise all the above felt reasonably safe so long as you stay away from the obvious rough areas at night.

Agree with all that's said. Definitely worth getting off the tourist beaten track. Much nicer and cheaper pubs / restaurants just a few hundred metres off the main tourist traps.

When you see a pub that says "non stop" above the door, that's exactly what it means!
