New owner here. I've just bought a 1999 Fzs 600 that's only done around 4000 miles. I've not passed my test yet (start training on the 23rd) so I'm using the time to fettle it a bit (not that it needs much) Just freeing off a sticky front brake piston and re-painting the main stand so far. On the advice of a forum member, I pulled off the drive sprocket cover and checked the drive sprocket nut. Its a 9mm thick nut. There's no sign of movement between sprocket, lock tab and nut. I'm pretty sure its the original chain and sprockets. So do I get a new 12mm thick nut and change it now or wait until I need a new chain/sprocket set and do it then?
Best change it asap, it only costs about £10,youll need tools to get it off & then back on at the right torque settings.
It was the first thing i did, not worth the riskofit coming off.
Tryusing the search function & type "fromt sprocket nut"
Youll get loads of info then.
Glad you cought it before it damaged anything 8)

I agree with Noggy, and I'm sure others will too. Bearing in mind that a well looked after chain kit can last thousands of miles, and from what I've seen and read about the damage a failure can cause (worst case you end up needing a new output shaft + what if it comes off when you're riding?), I'd just get the nut changed. Then at least you know you can relax on that issue. It's a pretty cheap bit of preventative maintenance, and whilst maybe not urgent right now, why wait til it is?
Attention-fazersharp is now kindly "bumping" his recent discussions on the issue for you to see.
What a good bunch we are on here.
No payment required, all i ask is that you welcome other new members & advise them the same when thetime arises.
Someone recently joined because their foxeye fazer 600 had stripped the shaft with the old nut on & it saddens me that good bikes are being trashed through no fault of their owners.
Theres allot of fazers out there & plenty still with the 9mm nut kick just waiting to happen.

EDIT: Just noticed you were going to get the nut anyway so just ignore this.
Here's the link to the nut on Wemoto. It IS the upgraded 12mm one (90891-10124-00) as I've stuck one on mine.

I have another question on this. The yam tech bulletin for the 04 at least says for the garage to use loctite 620 on fitting the new nut. What have people used here

I used elbow grease :|
I just tightened the nut up to 90Nm and have left it at that. I check it periodically with a torch and some prodding to make sure its still tight and haven't had any issues
Quote:and some prodding
Ok thanks --- but could you tell me were I can get this prodding from as I have looked everywhere and canot find any.

Forgive me if that was sarcasm but the internet sucks at conveying that sort of thing...
Prodding (or poking) = I poke it a bit with a screw driver / socket / something to see if its loose. If the nut doesn't move then it isn't loose and all is fine

...and I bought one of these on which to stick the nut. Block of wood in the rear wheel and it came off easily.
