How mobile should a thumb be
#1
Ok, so I've taken to the roads in my nice new outfit on my maiden ride after 20 years of motorcycle celibacy.  Hitting the straights in awe of this new found throbbing beast now between my legs. Which unlike its neighbouring original shows an increased performance after hitting 40  Wink .
My only problem with the experience, other than me being rather crap on the bends is that my nice new pair of gloves don't allow my thumbs to reach up and across to the switches, indicator lights etc without my lifting hand away from levers and grips which kind of interfered at times with the flow of the ride.

Is this just me being a noob, are all thumbs immobilized. Will the leather/gore tex between thumb and fore finger stretch over time and rectify this.  I don't think the gloves are too small, even though real thumb fits to end of glove thumb  :rolleyes

What gloves are they, and where did you get them from?

My usual advice when buying kit is to go to a shop and try it on, both on and off the bike; I've got a pair of RST gloves that do get uncomfortable after a while, whereas my other RST's and my Ixon gloves are fine.

My first thought is your gloves are a tad small.

Hi AdieR  thanks for reply:
they're hein gericke summit GTX.  I tried them on in shop, asked the assistant for size 11 which is my normal non bike glove size  and they seemed fine, didn't have the bike with me at the time  :\ .  I've checked their size chart online and  xl is indeed size 11 and my palm is 2-3cm less than stated for that size. perhaps it is just me and the gloves are made to fit round the grip. I'll get a smaller handed friend to try them Smile .

Sounds like they're a little bit too small,

If the glove is so tight at the point between the thumb & finger, the flappy skin part then it maybe isnt stretching enough horizontally.that being said it sounds like they'll stay on during a fall, some gloves would have mesh in that area to allow the thumb to stretch over.sounds like you will keep stretching this area, maybe it will loosen up, or maybe this stretching will start to cause a weak point.

Plus i recently read for winter gloves it is handy to have a small gap at the ends of the fingers as the air gap creates extra warmth in the cold stuff.
Easiest way to go fast........don't buy a blue bike

Decided to slip into the not so slinky mobile sauna hop on the saddle and blaze the trail to Maidstone Whereby I proceeded to enter HG store on my hands and knees pleading for the assistants mercy. No water was given but they were really great and allowed me to swap the gloves for next size up and as they needed to be ordered in they even agreed to deliver straight to my door.
That really is service to justify ridiculous high price (imo) for a pair of gloves  Smile

Incidentally I rode down wearing a pair of thin leather police style gloves without pain or wasted thought on switches.

Cheers for your help and nice to know I wasn't alone red98  Wink

Glad to hear you got it all sorted Smile

HG can be a bit more expensive, but personally, their customer service has been nothing but excellent in every single instance. The staff have always approached me to see if they can help and have always been friendly and full of useful advice Smile This has been across different stores as well

They've certainly encouraged a return visit. Should've asked if he knew how to adjust the clock  Wink
