another battery
#1
ok this is getting boring now !

another battery going in the bin

I wonder if its possible sencible or just plain stupid but can I fit a second standard battey under the seat ?

theres plenty of room ?

has this been thought of before done before ?

I dont have an power at my gargae so I cant use a optimate

I did have a car battery , but I can never remmber to plug it in , I do start the bike and warm it up but not enough by the signs of it !

ok so if this is a workable idea what is the wiring needed ?

can I simply run on wires from both negative and positive terminals? do I need anything on the wires? fuses ?

also will the alternator be able to charge both ?

or is this simply a pipe dream that doesnt hold water and will end up with me owning a pile of molten scrap aluminum steel and burnt plastic ?

hmmmmmmm

couple of Q's?
how long do you ride it for (roughly), accessories like heated grips/clothing/100w headlights
have you checked the stator output with the bike running.
on my bike the tickover output is @12.5v, that's not much charge going into the battery.
does your bike start easily or does it labour a bit.

i only ask these Q's as my battery has been on it ever since i've owned it, left outside all the time, 2 winters of neglect with the alarm on all the time, and it still fires up..............cue me needing a battery next week :lol

Don't get me going on batteries LOL.
I have had at least one a year and once it was 2 in a year.

Mine I know is from lack of use. Like you its stored outside all year round and is only taken for a ride when I can afford fuel. Which is a lot less than I would like. So it may get used every day for a week or not used for a month.
Each year around mid winter or early spring the battery dies.
I now have fitted a glass matt battery. It's only been on a few months so far, but has a much higher initial turnover speed than any other batteries I have tried. It is also MENT to last better in cold weather than gel types. We shall see.

Producers have become smarter and started making things less and less lasting, so we have to buy new ones.

Check your charging voltage. Should be about 12.5 volts on idle, and between 13.5 and 14 at 4000 plus revs. Never below 13.5 and never above 14 V.

If voltage is good, than there's no cure. Try checking it with all the lights/heaters/etc. It should still be above 13.5 V.

Adding more batteries will be a problem. Fazer's charger is optimized for 10 VA capacity and will not charge much larger capacity batteries. You MIGHT go with 10-20% more (like 12 VA), but that's it. Adding another whole battery will be a problem.

The first few years I had the bike from new I guess three or four years where no problem

This has only risen since then and because I dont get to use  the bike as much as I would like

When I do want to use it the batterys always flat !
I think Ive had five now !

I shall try to check the voltage on the charging circiut but not sure how yet

The bike runs with
sat nav, heated grips and a meta 3 alarm !

sounds like the extra battery is a no go then

thanks guys and gals !  it was a nice idea while it lasted !

The bike starts on the button everytime when it has charge and when it hasnt bumps first time everytime

but as I've got older I've got lazyer and got myself a jump pack which I leave in the car for emergencies

If you don't ride it often, take the battery off the bike when not in use? alarm obviously won't work, but bump/jump starting certainly doesn't help the life of your battery Smile

(or get a trickle charger you can use with the battery on your bike)

I now keep an old battery on charge indoors on my optimate for emergency. This year I will take the battery off the bike if I think its gunna be left for more than a day or 2.

Oh the other thing I did consider at one point was a solar charger that caravans can use.
I was going to just bungie it to the seat and fit a quick hookup wire to it while parked up.

"I dont have an power at my gargae so I cant use a optimate "

Also no Alarm no insurance

No way could I use a solar charger if you drop littler round near where i live some one nicks it !

so to leave one of them on display it would be gone before i've closed the front door !

as I said before I have a battery that I tried pluging in but I was forever forgetting to do it !

not sure when or don't know how to!

The bike runs with
sat nav, heated grips and a meta 3 alarm !

these will draw more power at low rpm than your stator can produce

the heated grips are very rarely used the same as the sat nav surely they dont use power then ?
