Focer font of (cooking) knowlage!
#1
Ok simple one i think but i didnt/dont know the right answer so....

I brought a Cookie mix to make some cookies. the pack has everything i need in other than butter. but i dont use butter i havent had butter for many years, i use a low fat spread that i doubt has more than a passing nod in the rough direction the 2nd cousin twice removed of butter.
So think i can use it in cooking of the said cookies? or do i need to buy a block of butter that i will never use again? Tongue

over to the chefs out there.

ps its a 39p pack that was on offer in morrisons so im not expecting that much anyway lol

This is the difference between blokes cooking and women cooking, we follow the instructions.  If it says to use 6.957 grams of something, we'll use 6.957 grams, not bung a bit in then add a bit more for good measure.  That's why there are more male chefs than female.......

If it says butter, used butter, after all, you wouldn't fill the sump on your bike with treacle because it looks a bit similar to oil would you?

But if you must use it make sure the first 5 metres is chain and the total cable scope is 3-4 times the depth allowing for the highest tide expected, Doh! Wrong forum...

as long as its NOT low fat spread you should be fine, but i have to say home made cookies are so simple, and dont contain all the crap that the packets do, for some really simple fairly healthy ones you could try flapjacks, or oak cookies see below

100g marg or butter
50g light brown sugar
2 tbsp/40g clear honey
1/4 tsp ground mixed spice (optional)
100g self raising flour
100g oats
50g raisins / cherries or leave out if you dont like

Oven 170C/150C for fan ovens/gas mark 3

Put spread, sugar and honey in heatproof bowl and microwave on high for 30 secs to 1 min till all melted.

Stir in mixed spice, flour, oats and raisins then mix together.

Put tablespoons of mixture on prepared baking trays. Flatten tops slightly with a fork.

Bake for 15 mins until golden brown and crisp on base.

Wow, waterproofing gear, ironing and now cooking. are we slowly turning into mumsnet?  :rollin

I'd use butter, the contents of margarine/low fat spread is different so the behavior at different temperature, salt concentration and pH could be different and totally ruin texture and taste of the cookies. Ultimately there's only one way to find out if there is a difference and that's two batches using butter and marge followed by blind taste testing.

I'd just buy a pack.

Buy a pack of butter. its only about £1.
The unused butter can be used in mashed spuds, fried onions/mushrooms, baked pots, soups, spread on toast etc., etc...........
I used to not give a foc, then I discovered Red Bull and now I don't give a flying foc !!!

It will say on the pack if it's suitable for baking; most low fat ones are ok (but won't taste as good) it's the very low fat spreads that won't work as the water content is too high.

I think a lot of posts (just like this one) are done to add to a active board and have a bit of a laugh.
these types of posts allways attract jokes and piss takes and thats what this section seems to be known for.

Now back to the cookie situation.....

It was a disaster lol i went and got some butter (unsalted) and made the mix up, well 2 mix's actualy 1 normal and 1 double choc.

The double choc spread out over the whole tray and turned in to 1 large blob of rock solid slab. totaly un eatable lol

The normal cookies faired a little better, they stayed in the 6 shapes they started as but like the first ones they turned to rock that when brocken was basicly dust lol.

so over all the thing i learned was i cant cook and/or dont use the cheap packet mix's Tongue

next week i might try OMF's recipe lol but as i can burn a salad then it may end in smoke and watering eyes Tongue

Use butter (best unsalted) as marge has different properties when heated
Dont ask it's a chef thing
