Battery charging problem

Hi fellow Fazers,

My Gen 1 needed a battery recharge after not being ridden for only a week. It did recharge OK but it took a over 24 hours to do so. With the battery on the bike I checked the voltage. When revved to 5k the voltage reads 13.9 volts, but at tickover it drops to 11.8 or 11.9 volts. Does this point to the battery or the charging system being duff?

How soon after having it on the charger did you take your readings ?


Batteries need to settle for atleast an hour before you will get an accurate reading from them.


It may also be prudent to check the connector plug from the stator to the wiring harness as these DO cause problems (have a search on the site as there was a thread on replacing the plug).

I just tried it again, so a good 2 hours after charging was completed. At anything above tickover I get 12v or more. At tickover 11.8 ish. I'll tweak the idle speed as it seems a bit low. for now.

lights on or off? newer models of gen 1 have lights perm on when running older ones can trn them off is why i ask.
Whats the battery raeading with engine and ignition off?

I think your battery is duff. Even with lights on 11.8v at tickover is low.
