Electrical Fault
#1
Hi All

Need some advice please, my fazer has developed a strange display fault that I am not sure where to start looking for.
Basically if the bike is stood idling with the either with the lights on or off and the flasher / pass button is pressed the whole
display shuts down then comes back on, I first noticed this when I was waiting to make a right turn and indicated for a car to pull out.
as soon as I turned the throttle though the display came back on, this only happens when the flash/pass button is pressed.

Could this be an earth fault? if so where do I start looking or could this be a switch fault developing as the bike has been on the road
all winter.

Cheers

When you're indicating, does the little green light on the display still flash to indicate your...indicating?

Did you notice what the rev counter does?
I say this as the bike i've recently bought had a flat battery, on tickover or lower revs with the lights on it lost display and rev counter, once revv'ed it'd start working again. Now the battery is fully charged its fine. I'm guessing as the 'mainbeam' draws more current than the 'dipped beam' you may be dropping below the threshold for the display working.
So maybe a charging issue, a battery issue or a bad connection to the display that with slightly lower voltage that mainbeam on and low rpm is causing a problem with getting enough current flow.

the whole display goes off, including the rev counter, speedometer, fuel gauge and clock then comes back on, all this happens only when the pass / flash button is pressed so far and not when indicating.
Hmmm flat battery, poss but this happened after a 96mile run home along the M1,M45 and A45 with a constant speed above 60mph.

unless you've a charging issue then as you say shouldnt be battery, unless its a bad connection to battery, or like you said in 1st post an earth problem.

Get a voltmeter over battery and see what its doing when you hit the pass button? (oh thats another thought, put dipped on and then use the mainbeam switch, see what happens then)

Lights are on all the time fed up with dozy car drivers trying to occupy the same space as me on the m'way, going back down to Luton tomoz so will see what happens with the main beam switch then.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but did you ever find out what was causing this? I just bought a 2002 FZS600 2 weeks ago and it has a very similar fault. At first, the pass light didn't work at all. But after my first run out on the bike, the pass light started working, but when I press it, my display goes off for a split second (rev counter etc. all goes off), then it comes back on again and the oil light and fuel light flash like they do when you first start the bike. I also noticed that the pass light isn't as bright as the full beam is when you flick the full beam on via the headlight switch.

I opened my left hand switch gear and the wires seem fine. I also checked the voltage at the battery in case the battery was on it's way out and that's what was causing the issue, but I'm getting around 12.6V from the battery when the bike is off and around 14V when the bike is running.

I imagine the fault could be a bad earth, as mentioned in the original post, but where am I best checking next? Are the main connections under the fuel tank?

Thanks

The unfortunate problem on here is that not everybody comes back to tell what the problems were and what they did to fix it.
Your problem sounds like a corrosion or loose connection problem.

All the main connections are under the tank in a box.
As a start point, lift the tank open the black box and take the connections apart, treat them with contact cleaner or WD40, push them togrther and take them apart a few times.
There is also a white connector with 2 black wires under the seat either on top of the battery of near the right side of the battery, check this also as this is one of the loom earths

Try this and let us know the result
