Rear brakes were sticking and now not working
#1
Hi there,

I was reading the post about sticking rear brakes but obviously not soon enough as mine were sticking and now they are just not working. When I press the rear brake pedal it just goes up and down with nothing happening. Any ideas as to what could be happening?

Thanks

Roger

have you got any brake fluid in it? how bad was it sticking? has it worn the pads away? also I think you should be in the fzs600 section?

Word of advice, if you know your brakes are sticking, stop riding the bloody thing and get them fixed. Costs of getting a bus are going to be considerably less than having your rear brake lock on and you hitting something or someone!

They are not sticking any longer as they no longer work. But previously they were not sticking too bad.

The pads are fine and the brake fluid level is fine.

Thanks

Sounds to me as though they're just seized solid? Is there resistance when you push the lever? (other than that provided by the spring of course)

I just stripped the rear caliper on mine. It was so badly corroded that I'm surprised it was working at all! From what I have read elsewhere, this seems to be an ongoing problem as the drain holes in the back of the caliper get fouled up with all kinds of road grime, then no water can escape.
People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do.

Thanks for the replies,

Figured it out. It was the rear master cylinder. When I took it out (or my Dad) it was all corroded. Got a 2nd hand one from ebay. It was also a bit corroded (under the rubber bung) but not too bad. Fixed it up again and topped up the brake fluid and all well.

All well except the weather!!

Thanks again
