Also, it doesn't need to be that style of bike. Open to suggestions
I had a gs500 for work, it was a hoot to ride! 65+mpg too! Fired up every time, and just kept going rain, hail or shine.
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!
What's you're trip to work like?
When I was getting a bike I was looking at the CB500 before deciding on a fazer. Seem to be reliable from everything I read. I've even been planning to keep my old 125 for little trips where I'm mostly filtering.
Here's my vote from a very quick scout

Good luck fella!
Those are my principles...if you don't like them I have others.
I had a c70 top bike for a short trip to work
An FZS600? They are cheap, easy to work on, and can last for years.
But then I guess you probably already knew that.....!
Yeah, and to be fair I'm not going to have the second bike the same as the first. I want something a bit different too.
Hi Hightower
I bought a cb500 ten years ago which was ten years old then with 10k miles on for £800.
Ten years on it has 56k on the clock lives outside in all weathers and has passed every MOT and apart from consumables the only thing i have done to it is put a starter motor from ebay at £40 on it.
It gives me no less than 55mpg and is great fun to ride.
Of course it is not the best looking but is like a flea bitten old dog and i love to bits.
It may not be your cup of tea but if you want something cheap very reliable it may offer what you are looking for.
Regards
My wife will probably be flogging her old ZZR 400 soon. Just like ZZR600 but sleeved down. In reasonable nick, 20 years old, still good fun, probably only worth a few hundred quid.
ive had a er5 since new, 65mpg ,will sit a 90 allday 63k tatty used in all weathers still going strong ,make sure the charging system/reg is ok
