Cleaned my chain & sprocket

Gave the bike a good clean yesterday, but whats a clean bike on the outside if other parts are filthy.


Decided to clean the chain & inside the sprocket cover & now got it to a respectable standard. Smile


I couldnt get all the grit out & particularly hard to get at was the plastic chain runner which had loads of grit along itbut i guess that'll need to wait til i get a new chain & sprocket.


Sorry pics are tilted to the left,it never puts them upright when i use my ipad  camera vertically.

I personally think the gold chain looks much nicer than the standard one's, i'll try post a picture of mine to show you  Smile

First pic still looks 10x better than when I first took my front sprocket cover off.  Big Grin

How does the sorocket look chaps????,has it got a bit of life left in it?.obviously got the updated sprocket nut  on there n'all for peace of mind, i just need to bend over a couple more of the tabs on the washer.

Looks great, I always fit the DID gold chains to all my bikes - any excuse for a bit of extra bling as well as a good chain!

I do like that gold chain,proper blings things up a bit!,


Trouble is im now gonna have to cover mine in some decent lube now.


Im sure i read somewhere to go for a spin to heat up the chain then lube it & leave overnight so it sets in properly instead of flinging everywhere.worth a try?

Get a scottoiler used from eBay. About the same price as a can of decent lube but its cleaner and better. Chains last 20k easy with scottoilers. Never worry about lube again.

Was just about to reply to that last, noggy, then got the scottoiler message from ids. So of course you can go that way. If you don't want a Scottoiler: then yes, not absolutely necessary, but is the recommended method. But if you forget, or are pushed for time, just lube it anyway if needed. Better a quick lube at the last minute than no lube at all.

I only use Wurth lube, or wax.
Using the wax at the moment, i think i slightly prefer it over the lube, and it's always applied after giving the bike a spin when the chain's warm.

I'd consider a scottoiler but i like using chain wax & im not sure what these scottoilers can use & so far ive been pretty good at remembering to lube up but perhaps with a tendency to be a tad excessive with quantity so perhaps a scottoiler would be more efficient & u iform in that respect.


Certainly food for thought.

Nobody's answered OP's question about front sprocket wear.
Is it worn? How do you judge when it needs replacing?

Apparently the teeth go like a shark fin & im guessing by nobody instantly saying wooooah get that sprocket changed that this one's ok for now,


Would be interesting if anyone had a pic of a brand new sprocket fitted,to be fair there probably is on the site somewhere so ill try having a search.

If you're doing the nut you might as well do the sprocket. They're fairly cheap

Hard to tell from the angle photos taken from, but yes, once you start to get that "shark's fin" look, it's time to change. Does appear to still have good "flats" on the tooth tips, so not the worst I have seen. Have seen bikes with virtually no teeth left at all, just little bumps - honestly, you wonder sometimes!! Also, people get lazy and just check the rear - "oh that's ok then". Of course, the front wears much more quickly.

Excellent,thats handy to know, ill get a few mile out it yet & perhaps change everything next season for good order.i know im only doing basic stuff but theres something strangely therapeutic about fettling the bike.i really cant be arsed with the car on the other hand.


Well the bike is now gleaming,checked out & lubed up before mine & bri-h's little spin round snowdonia next week so fingers crossed the weather behaves itself.

wd 40 & a toothbrush & kitchen roll & an old pair of pants  :lol , that's the truth too., for the chain itself i applied wd40, agitated all over with toothbrush, applied some more wd40, left 5 minutes then ran the chain through my hands holding none other than......another pair of old pants Big Grin , good old wd & pants combo!!!
