Hi everyone,
I wonder if someone can shed a bit of light on my problem. Whilst riding my bike today,it has started to make a funny noise. the best way to describe it, is that it sounds like a very loud electric bike?? it only happens whilst riding. If I rev it in neutral it sounds fine.
Thanks, Lee.
Hi Lee. You'll have to give a bit more info to get an accurate answer. Do you know what area of the bike the sound is coming from? Did it start all of a sudden or has it been there for a while? Have you done any work on the bike recently? Any vibrations or any other symptoms other than the noise? How many miles on the chain and sprocket?
hi mate, from what i can make out it is coming from the front of the bike. It started today, Apart from the noise it seems to be riding fine. I've only had the bike for about 3 months only thing I've done to it is get a new set of tyres. I think the chain is new(guy i got it from said he had recently changed it) hope this helps a little
Does it happen consistently or is the noise affected by engine speed and / or road speed ?
no not consistently if i rev it in neutral its ok, noise only there whilst in gear and moving
does the noise go away if you pull the clutch in?
does it change pitch/get louder the faster you go?
does it matter which gear you are in?
Check that your spark plugs are all tight :eek
I had a similar noise cos I'd forgotten to tighten them after replacing. Doh :o
Sounds like an electric bike- do you mean like a whirring noise? - a new chain slightly too tight makes a similar noise (although ths wouldn't come from the front of the bike!)
Some say...
hi mickvp yeah noise goes if i put the clutch in and gets louder the faster i go in all gears, punkstig, it's like a high pitched whirring.
Going to check plugs and sprocket when i get home from work

New chains, especially heavy duty ones, make quite a loud whirring noise for a while until they settle into place on the plastic chain guide.
Start by giving the chain a good lube, but the noise will slowly reduce over time.
Otherwise, get a louder end can
More people are born because of alcohol than will ever die from it.
when you say new tyres?...by any chance would they be bridgestone bt021,s..the front can make similar noises to what your describing!
yeah they are bt021's been on for about 150/200 miles
An over-tight chain can put too much strain on the output shaft bearing, can cause a whining sound. Many people have a tendency to over-tighten the chain. Check this.
If it's 600 check your speedo drive isn't broken. Mine did a similar thing, speedo still worked but I thought I had a stone on something stuck in my brake caliper or something, anyway I removed the wheel glued on the broken lug on the drive until I could buy another one and then forgot about it. That was last year....oops, ah well now I've done it I'll be going to the dealership next week now.lol.
Andy
checked speedo drive and yes it is broken.Ordered new one so will let you know when it arrives and is fitted
Make sure you grease it when replacing, similar thing happened with my last Fazer, a strange rubbing sound coming from the front end going anything over 35. I had it in every bike shop in glasgow and tried new wheel bearings, new chain and sprocket, i was advised to put original screen back on even though i never had it to begin with. Turned out to be a totally dry grease seal on the front wheel :o
If you think my attitude stinks, you should smell my finger!
I got a new Shoei helmet recently, can't hear foc all now :lol
Wish I could I'm working:-(
