Water in oil after cylinder head overhaul

I took the head off my FZS600 to sort out a leaky valve. Stripped down the head sorted problem and reassembled. Put head back on with a new genuine Yamaha gasket. Did cam timing and checked all ok. It fired up first time and ran good for 10mins. I had a few coolant pipes leaking so I thought I would stop the engine and tighten them up. Left for 30 mins and checked the oil. Couldn't see any oil in the window so I topped up and topped up still nothing in window. Then I realised something was wrong and thought the worst. Water in the oil. I drained the oil out and it was thick mayonnaise. Took the cam cover off and it was everywhere. I assume all it can be is cylinder head gasket failure. Should I of had  my cylinder head checked and skimmed. More to the point can I clean my engine out with something or is it a complete strip down?

Did you remove the residue of the old gasket from the mating surfaces?

Did you thouroughly clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder and cylinder head and torque the head evenly to 35Nm?
It is always good practice to check the head and cylinder mating surfaces for warpage when dismantled and skim if necessary.
1. Drain all the oil coolant out reassemble and put fresh oil and coolant in.
2.Turn the engine over a good number of times on the starter motor with the plugs out.
3. Drain the oil and replace the oil filter and all should be ok.
If you think it necessary repeat the procedure from step 2 and just replace the oil.

I thoroughly cleaned both the cylinder head and block and torqued to 35Nm using a torque wrench.
Is there any differences between cylinder head gaskets throughout the FZS600 range? I know the part numbers aren't the same.
Also would it be ok to use cheap car engine oil as a flush?

The  Fazer 600 carb models 1998 to 2003 all use same cylinder head gasket and the part number is 5DM-11181-00. There is no other number listed for the 1998 to 2003 FZS600
If yours is any other number other than the above, then that is your problem.
The Fazer 400 looks the same but will not fit and its number is 4YR-11181-00.
The Thundercat  also looks the same but will not fit and its number is 4JH-11181-00

Cheap car engine will be ok, obviously the more times you flush it through the less traces of coolant you will have.

also worth a mention.....head gasket only goes one way up......marked "up" on gasket  Wink

Red98, forgot to mention that very important piece of information .
An upside down gasket would certainly pour out coolant

indeed....the word "up" is stamped through the gasket....hold it up to the light to see easier  Wink

All is good now.
I know I placed the head gasket the correct way. Done loads before. I thought about why would it leak. I got paranoid and wondered if my torque wrench was way out. I roughly calibrated it with weights and found it was reading low. I removed my camshafts again and checked the tightness of the bolts. They were quite a bit loose. I tightened all up. Replaced camshafts and retimed the cam chain. Filled with cheap car engine oil and started the engine. All good no more water contamination. Ive changed the oil again and all is clean. Compression is all good, no leaks either.  Thanks for all the good advice. Will get it on the road soon after ive sorted out my crappy original downpipes.

Glad to hear you got it sorted.
Another happy Foccer, on the road just in time for the good weather.
For information: Always wind the torque wrench back to zero when finished using them, otherwise the wrench will start to read lower over time.

Just being curious, would car engine oil not cause the clutch to slip? Or is it a case of the oil is not in there long enough to cause any problems??

It depends on the car oil - some of it is perfectly fine to use, other stuff is a big no no
