I picked up a tatty Gsx600f for £300 ish like you I just wanted to tinker for fun. So far spent about 80 quid and its about ready for Mot but not sure if I'm going to alter much. For me it was a toy to get through a mot. Then I may take it to brands for fun or just sell it on with mot and buy something eles.
Did see a zzr 600 on eBay with dropped plastics for 250 last week. That seems to be the way to go. Old 80-90s fairing bike that's been dropped.
