I have just noticed that a crack in the top yoke casting beneath the ignition switch has developed since I last saw it, as the picture shows. So far as I can see this does not look structural as such, but I would appreciate any opinions on the safety of riding the bike until I can get hold of a replacement yoke and sort it out.
The main break looks to be in the ignition switch housing with just a small chunk missing from around the fixing hole in the yoke itself. From that point of view I would say there is no loss of structural integrity to the main function of the yoke. However from a safety angle I would be very concerned about the danger of that housing becoming more displaced and jamming the steering.
It is a very strange thing to have broken and I would be investigating what has caused it.
The size of the potholes I occasionally hit ( you cant avoid all of them :\ ) I'm surprised bits aren't dropping off with boring regularity - bloody dentist and osteopath are making fortunes from me thanks to the highways dept :'( - bastards!
get off the cooker granny, you're too old to ride the range

Thanks for your comments, having scratched my head over this I have also reached the conclusion the bike is pretty safe to ride - at least as far as a friends garage where I intend to replace the whole Yoke/steering lock castings and locks on Boxing day. FYI I know how it happened. A works van backed into the bike outside my house and knocked it over, the steering lock had not worked since. Oops I have since done a 1,500 mile trip around europe!
