Gen 1 Handlebars / risers

I've just got the Fazer, want some pics / advice for lowering and probably changing the bars for something less high and turned back at the ends please.

I am used to R1s and the like, but I think the best height of bars on any bike I've had was my ZX9R.

Anyone help me out with advice on how to cheaply lower the bars with different spacers from another make/type of bike?

Have looked at some old posts about certain Renthal bars which is interesting too, but all I can find are spacer to LIFT the bars and not lower....

I just put on some renthal flat bars. Pulls you slightly more forward and puts weight over the front. Add to that a jacked up rear and dropped through forks and you have a more attacking stance.

Cool, that sounds like what I am after... Do you know which model of bars they are? I think I searched the forum and saw possibly 658s mentioned.

I am deffo going to jack up the rear preload (possible R6 mod to come) for now and drop the front end a bit.

Not even had her 24 hours yet, but I can tell from the standard bike there is a lot of potential here... must sort out the shit front brake a.s.a.p!

Funny you should mention that shit front brake, cos I think mine are pretty crap too compared to the CBR's that I've had. I was expecting them to be amazing, but they're just "alright".  On a CBR you need VERY little pressure to produce VERY positive braking effect. On the Fazer I find myself grabbing a fair old handful.
Rear brake's spot on.

look out for some GYTR risers (they lower the whole bar set up by an inch), and then change the bars to a shape that suits.


I sold a set on here a few weeks back, but they pop up on eBay sometimes

Usually sticky pistons I find. Mine's been ridden over winter and neglected a bit.

Are those the original bars with a brace added and you just rotate them about a bit? Saw on a US forum someone moved them. That kit looks ace, pricey though unless I can source from USA. HMMM.

The bars above in the pic look like 758 to me, I did have those but now have 658 fitted. Flatter and not such a pull back.
I did once speak to a guy that fitted risers ( higher ones) then fitted 758 upside down to get a dropped clip on feel/look. Personally I thought it looked shite though Tongue

My Bars are indeed Renthal 758's with a Renthal brace.

I had Renthal 758s on my bike when I bought it, have now fitted 658s and its made a big difference. As Ghostbiker said, they give you a more attacking stance and are a little narrower. I also find them easier to control the bike at walking pace. Try changing the bars before going down the changing the risers path.
As for shit brakes, mine had those when I bought it as well, it now has excellent brakes or it did til I put some SBS pads on it!
My suggestion for improving your brakes is, a good clean up of the calipers, stainless braided hoses, decent EBC hh pads and a really good bleeding. Brakes are now spot on.

Cheers for the input, have seen some risers from another Yam I may try out, or I will go down the bars route, but if I get renthals, I will need new ends for them.
I just rotated the bars back slightly last night while I was fiddling about with it.

Have a plan for the brakes too, but a simple piston cleaning job is on the cards first, as it costs nowt...

Is all that thread needed on the lower clamps to go through the top yoke?

I've stumbled across something, but thread looks much shorter, dunno if I will take a gamble or not... in pic above, there looks to be way more thread than I can picture being necessary in my head.

Yes its needed, there is only a few threads showing after the nut is tightened, much shorter studs and you wont get a nut on.

Still not changed mine yet, anyone aware if the Gen2 ones are much different? Also still contemplating the GYTR mount, but even the Yamaha picture of that shows a set of silver handlbars not the originals... cheeky gits.

Got to dig this back up!  :rolleyes

Have some 758's on their way and I have been trawling ebay for some risers. It seems I have found some cheaper options, but need to try and get some measurements still, or bite the bullet and try it, so I can pass info on.
But basically, there are some clamps I have found from a few bikes that use bolts through them and the yoke, instead of the threaded section being built in.
Finding a set of lower and upper clamps from one place seems to be the problem at the mo, lots of chrome crap around too, not gonna look great with Renthals is it?!  :lol

SV650 ones are like rocking horse shit and priced up about £60-70 from Suzuki, so a no-go.
I just need to see if these replacements will allow the bars to clear the fork tops OK.
