Finally got bike back together. She started, sounded a bit rough. I thought must need a bit of a run....... Dont mistake fuel problem for timing problem I said to myself but carried on! Only later when oil was coming out of the exhaust drain hole did I think somethings not right. Ah well, hole in no 4 piston, start again. Note to self- double double check timing....

sounds like you rushed yourself  :'(

I always spin the engine a fair few times on the spanner before I feel safe about the timing.
Was the tensioner working correctly and did you make sure that the chain was taut on the opposite side to the tensioner.

All simple checks but easily overlooked when in a rush to get the motor running before you run out of light/need bike for work tomorrow and a mirade of other reasons  :\

Yeah, rushed it as you describe..... Will take more time next time. Engine half stripped again!

Not so ouch....still have an engine sitting behind my shed ...with a good head and pissed-ons

Nearly rebuilt (again). I got new top end from DK in Stoke(ish). I am going to take plenty of time to get timing right!
Any top tips much appreciated...

Just what I said above really,
Spin the engine a few times on the spanners checking the timing marks again after each full rotation  :thumbup

Turn the engine on the spanner (and without plugs in)  and the cam cover off....in the normal direction of rotation..use an oil can on the cam lobes then check cam chain tension (both sides)

Did you find a full set of bits after the mishap? If there are any bits of the jigsaw missing it'll be worth double-checking they didn't end up in the sump to cause problems later.

I am beginning to wish I had  titled this  thread differently! Todays the day to sort timing out.
Will be taking  great care this time. I can`t bear driving my car any longer.
