Yes I've looked in there and it's all either wiring diagrams, parts catalogues, paint codes, other models or written in Japanese. I need a Haynes manual or something similar but they just don't seem to exist anywhere for some reason.

The FZS400 was a bike made for the Japanese market and only imported into english speaking countries in small numbers so people like Haynes wont do a manual as the market isnt there to sell the manuals.
IIRC the main difference under the tank between the 400 and the 600 would be the lack of fuel pump. Carbs out should be a similar job on both bike though.

Ok thanks for the info, I've had a go at it following the 600 manual but once the tank came off everything was completely different so I might just have to give up and take it to a garage
post some pictures and tell us what the actual issues are , we may be able to help still.

As bbrown1664 said above, get some pics up from under the tank and we can guide you through it.
Why do you think you need to get the carbs off?
Sounds like the carbs could need a clean - stick some photos up and we can help guide you through

Removal of the carbs is almost the same as the 600, just remove the plastic tray over the carbs which holds the coils.
Remove the two plastic rivets which attach it to the frame and pull out the drain hose with it.
Take note of how it locates first, don't lose the rubber funnel attached to the tray which funnels any fuel or water from the top of the tank (same as the 600).
400 Carbs are Kehin, 600 carbs are Mikuni.
Just be aware clutch plates are completely different to the 600, but EBC do a set code CK2371.
Carb inlet rubbers and down pipes for the 600 fit.
