Hi Guys its me again, I'm still helping my mate with his FZ1 last time it was a clutch prob which we sorted but this time he has a Missfire but its a strange one.
The symptom
When starting from cold it starts and run fine, this last a few minutes and then without being touched the revs drop and it starts to miss fire. Its all most like it runs Ok on choke but when that comes off it miss fires. How ever it will rev and seems Ok above 5k.
What we have tried so far
Checked Plugs, Coils with a multi meter, Replaced the fuel line, checked all vacuum hoses. There is no fault codes showing and the TPS is at 17 bottom and 94 top. It runs the same with the Tank up or down . He has a power commander fitted so we in plugged that and it made no difference. Checked the clutch and side stand switch's all ok.
Something happens when it get warmed up to a certain point, I'm thinking a sensor is failing or something but don't know.
Any one got any Ideas please as I'm stumped.
Check out the Thermowax unit, been known to stick and cause idling issues.
when you checked the plugs, did you check HT lead to plug connector ?
(had a similar issue and cut 1/4 inch off HT leads and voila o.k !!)
A little confused when you say HT leads, this model has coil sticks and just two wires connecting via a plug
my mistake there :eek I didn't realise the FZ1 had coils (modern tech).. :o :o
Thanks for the Link I will give it a try all though the symptoms are not exactly the same.
Isolate which cylinder is misfiring through use of those infra red thermometers off ebay.
Switch the plugs around from that cylinder to a "good" one, if the misfire moves then it's the plug.
If not, swap the stick coils and see if that moves it.
If not that, swap the injector around.
If that doesn't do it then you have an ECU fault.

Thank you we did swap both plugs and coils around but it made no difference, we didn't have a thermos meter but it appeared to all ways be number 4 cylinder. What is strange about this one is that it runs fine on start up then after it starts to get warm its like a switch is flicked and the miss fire starts, you can almost set your watch by it, also it runs fine above 5k so its not your normal plug or coil failure.
I know you've swapped things around but I had exactly this problem just after Christmas. New set of plugs (old ones only 3 months old) but no better. Changed coil sticks on 1 and 4 and problem solved.
Don't know how good they are but you can get them on eBay for about 60 gbp but I got genuine ones from the dealer for around 100 quid each.

No, it was just a good old fashioned misfire but only when it was above 60 degrees. The coil stick was shorting down in the tube.

Makes sense, as the spark system was working as far as the ECU was concerned.
Not saying this is your problem but it does sound remarkably similar.
If it was old school I'd say it sounded like a ht lead arcing.

Going on whats being said it sounds like we are going to have to source a coil stick and start swapping them over.
