Looks great if it happens but by the sound of it it's still a way off. Suzuki are at least a couple of years ahead with the GSX1000F, which in my opinion looks fantastic and something Yamaha looks like it's trying to emulate here. I think Yamaha wasted an opportunity not developing the Fazer and concentrating on the poor MT range including the dreadful adventure style looking Tracer. They've ignored the Fazer fan base and the street bike we all love and now have to catch up. I hope they do it right and bring out real cracker.

Like it or not, the Tracer is competitively priced and winning lots of plaudits from the bike press and those who buy it.  It ticks boxes that keep a lot of would-be Fazer owners content.

Every few years we get a magazine photoshop job of an R1 look-alike with regular bars on it.  Is there a big enough market for this kind of bike, though?  How many 1000Fs are Suzuki shifting?  With BMW having a variant of their I-4 based bike to suit every taste, does it make financial sense for Yamaha to develop and produce what might be a nice but niche 'upright R1 lite'?

The BMW s1000r is competitive but more of a naked bike while their XR adventure variant is competition to the Tracer but both BM's are way more expensive at 13k plus. The Suzuki is more of a upright sports bike and at 10k is what I'd go for. While I think the Fazers are cracking bikes Yamaha have done very little to bring out a Gen 3 and I think they would retain market share if they got their skates on.

The MT is cheap, but also looks cheap and I do not see quality there.

The new Fazer gets my vote  :thumbup

They are the best selling bike in Europe and heading that way in the UK though. Yamaha have done something right by making them cheaper and selling in volume! Bloody good buisness sense if you ask me.

Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

They sell like hotcakes in the US too. My daughter has an MT-07 (FZ-07 in the US) and I must admit it is a very fun bike to ride around town (I refer to it as "the scooter" Smile  )


I would like to see a new Fazer also, more along the line of the carburated FZS1000 (FZ1 gen 1 in the US), i.e. a great smooth sport touring naked bike, with emphasis on the touring part (with bikini fairing, relaxed riding stance and a tank large enough for 200 miles between pit stops) but with enough low end torque to compete with the Ninja 1000 and the Suzuki Bandit 1250. For those who want a real sport bike, there are plenty to choose from. There are just not many sport tourers.

Surely the Fazer was a bit of a "budget" bike when Yamaha realised what Suzuki were doing with the Bandit. When I say budget I mean it hardly excelled in the suspension area 7 carried a heavy old drainpipe of an exhaust silencer.  It certainly is a good "all-rounder" and was value for money back in the day-exactly what Yamaha have aimed for (& achieved) with the MT-07 in terms of sales volume around the world.
It could be argued that the Mt-09 wasnt properly developed but Yamaha have addressed the fuelling/suspension niggles with the Tracer which to my mind is a modern take on the fazer concept.
The proof of the popularity of the 07 & Tracer is in the riding-dont knock them til you try them-both the 2 & 3 cylinder engines deliver albeit slightly different from the Fazers 4 pot motors but IMHO all are equally good bikes-not perfect of course but for most "real world" purchasers the price comparison with some other brands is a major attraction.I dont feel its fair to compare bikes in the £6k-£8.5k bracket with those costing north of £10K :lol

The fact that Yamaha ditched both the FZ8 and FZ1 when they introduced the Tracer indicates pretty clearly the direction they are going in. "R" sportsbikes and "MT" and variants like the Tracer for streetbikes. Sadly, I don't expect a new FZ of any size in the immediate future.


In design terms (IMO), the Tracer probably has more in common with the TDM than with the Fazer, it's more of a tall-rounder than the Fazer, and has a much more upright riding position and a longer gap between the seat and pegs. I didn't find it comfortable and I don't particularly like the look of it or the MT09.


Although the MT07 is, again IMO, a better looking bike than the MT09, it's not as powerful as the FZS600 and wouldn't be a bike I'd buy.


The only option left would seem to be to buy an older R1, fit some flat bars and a bikini fairing.... that's probably the only way to get the new FZ many of us would like!

Kawasaki are selling a lot of 1000SXs so there is a market. Suzuki are trying with their new 1000F, BMW have the 1000XR (amazing reviews, but it's way too bulky for commuting for me), maybe Yamaha will address that market too. I reckon there's a MT-11 out there somewhere in testing. Although that might be wishful thinking.... cross plane 4 crank, comfy, active suspension, 55 to the gallon, 160bhp, loads of torque.... oh yeah....
