Stiff choke cable
#1
Hello
I am new here and have a question about my Fazer

When i slide the choke on it seems very stiff to operate. Also the engine bogs down and dies when applied. Is the a common problem? I assume the inner cable needs lubricating?

They have a generally stiff mechanism, no worries there.

When applied you are literally starving the engine of air, so chances are you shouldn't even be touching it, especially in this warmer climate.

When first starting i apply some choke to increase engine revs to allow to warm up. But when i slide it further the engine bogs down and dies instead of increasing engine revs.

They are quite sensitive to too much choke I've found and it will only make starting harder sometimes if you persist with it.
At this time of year I only apply the choke briefly and sometimes only half on, just to get the engine going, then maybe hold the throttle slightly open with the choke off to warm up a bit before riding.

...slightly open meaning approx the normal idle speed of the engine when hot Wink.

will have a play..is it normal to bog down and die if too much choke?

Yes that's normal.

You need to view the choke as a starting-up mechanism rather than a warming-up mechanism really.
If the engine will happily keep running without it then turn the choke off. It will only increase engine wear in the long term.

:agree

Yep turn off what little choke was used almost straight away and use the throttle as the engine will not be idling at the normal speed but if i try to give too many beans at this stage before the engine is ready it will bog down. Gently dose it awaking the beast
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

These bikes run a little rich anyway, all you are doing is making it richer by air starvation.
You should not be touching the choke at all in warm weather, it's simply not necessary, and as you are finding out will cause you problems.
I only use the choke on very cold mornings in winter.

Is your air filter okay?
If anything i would suggest you need more air, rather than shutting it off.
If you have no known history, treat it with a K&N air filter, it will improve the general running and feel of the bike.
