Okay straight question. Is the Gen 1 a more comfortable ride than the Gen 2. No bias please I am sure a few on here will be tired of me bitching about my knee problems. I thought I had got a result when I fitted the lowering kit for the front pegs. Sadly for me it has not worked out.
My wife is kicking off, ( fecking bike all you do is polish it blah blah) Any advice please !!!!! really I still love me bikes but getting pretty depressed now.I had a couple of projects I wanted too get on with during the Spanish super heated summer. A mate let me sit on his HD, Think I would just say feck it than go down that route.
Advice please. :'(

Thanks lads the tiger seat height would be a problem I am 5'10'' on a good day 29'' inside leg but more like 28'' if I am honest.
Will see if I can have a seat on Gen 1.

I am 5`8" with a 28" inside leg. Had my gen1 for six years before I got my gen2 and I find the gen2 just as comfortable as the gen1.
I have one dicky knee but it doesn`t at the moment cause me any real problems except for weird cramps and occasional bouts of agonizing pain!
One difference I find with the gen2 is I can get both feet flat on the floor whilst with the gen1 I couldn`t.
I think what you need to do is sit on as many different bikes as you possibly can to try out the seating position, what about a maxi scooter? A guy near me has one and he gets a right move on and he looks as comfy as foc.

Lew, slimwilly has made a custom seat that is much thicker than standard. It looks like a lumpy mattress :lol but seems to work for him. Why not get a custom seat made that is much thicker (2 inches or so?). It may be a bit expensive to have done, but will be a one-off spend, and if it keeps you riding a bike that you clearly love, gotta be worth it?
Or, as Frosties said, try an adventure style bike like the Tracer, or Ducati Multistrada to see if you have more leg room. Some of these new adventure bikes are getting to be as good on the road as more traditional-styled fare - if you have the dosh, what about the new BMW one with the S1000R engine? Saw one the other day, and it looks the business. Get out and test ride a few. We all love our Fazers, but they aren't all that's around.
This is my current setup so the pegs are dropped by about 25mm?
I am seeing a specialist about my knees on the 24th September so hopefully they might give me a date for a knee job.

I have the same problem as you ans went down the same lowered peg route, it didn't work. The extra room was ok, but I had to twist my foot inwards more to reach the pedals, which hurt more than my knee after a long trip.
I ended up raising the seat 2" as has been said before and it really improved things for me, but I suggest you try sticking some foam padding on your current seat before splashing out on a custom job.
I bought two scrap fazer seats, took the vinyl off one and the foam off the other. Cut the pillion section off the foam and glued the remainder to the other seat, then covered it all in more vinyl. Looks awful but now I know it works I can get it remade by a pro.
Broken, bruised, forgotten, sore,
too fucked up to care any more.

I did this with my gen 1, and it made a bit of a difference. I used 2 layers of an old camping style roll mat and gaffer tape.
It looked horrendous, and I took a ribbing at work for it, but it helped with the knee angle, and reduced the screen buffering as well!
I still ended up selling her and getting a tiger 1050 mostly for my pillion comfort, but by beck it's a comfy riding position! (not as quick or good in the corners though!)
Been a long while since I had a gen 1 but it is more comfy, not as much knee bend I think. Though the only way to find out is to try one.
You could go the other way and try an mt09 as well but my knees are quiet bent on that.
I had a sit on an MT-07 which I nearly bought, was going to buy but thanks to a time waster the sale on the FZ1 fell through. I liked the light weight of the 07 and to be honest my touring days are well behind me now. The MT-07 was a mates bike and it was a steal 12 months old 8Kms on the clock loads of extras on it, €4850, I was getting a bike with 12 months Yamaha warranty remaining and from the sale of the FZ sticking €1500 in my pocket. There was still a wee twinge on the knees but the seat could be well sculptured and raised so it was a result. I would love the MT-09 Tracer but just beyond my budget.

i have a gen 1 fazer and i have had both my hips replaced and being 6ft 2" i needed a little more room as the standard set up had my knees level with my hips which for me is not a good position, tried the footpef lowers but didnt find they made much difference but then had a seat custom built which was raised 1" on the front with gel inserts in front and rear and now i can do 300miles a day. yes i am in a bit of pain after but nothing too bad compared to before. i could monly manage about 100 miles but now i feel confident enought to plan a few trips for next year.
