high mileage

Hi all. I'm new to the site but I'm looking at getting a fazer 600. I've seen one an '03 one that is reasonably local to me and within budget but it has over 55000m on the clock. The advert says there is part service history and lots of receipts and it sounds like the bike has been well looked after.
Does anyone else have a high mileage bike or know of one. Is there anything in particular I should look for.

Worn front and rear wheel bearings , and as the bike is more than 10 years old , wear and tear on the wiring and connectors , with the mileage being that high check the price on Parkers and then haggle it down , as you may have to spend a bit of money on it .

Cam chain rattle would be one thing, when you start the bike up if it needs doing it will make a noise similar to a sewing machine.
With some bikes it will disappear when warmed up,and with others the noise will stay,


It's a bit of a tricky one because my chain was replaced around the 30k mark, it's now on around 45k, and last year it rattled for about 7 months then the tensioner finally clicked another notch one day and it all went weirdly silent, i actually thought something was wrong 'cos i was standing next to it without a crash helmet on when it happened.  :lol 
Although i only do short journeys to work, mainly through heavy traffic, so i'd imagine that was the main reason why it took so long to find the next notch on the tensioner.


Other than listening, i would just ask the question if it's been done recently or not.


This bike does sound a bit ropey anyway to me, but you can clearly hear the rattle.

Id be looking for new brake hoses too ie some braide ones because the originals will be passed their best.


I think yamaha say replace brake hoses every 3 years or something which nobody does but at 45k i wouldnt trust originals.

45k is my bike Noggy, the one he's on about is 55k.


My braided brake hoses turned out to be the cause of my juddering problem when braking, if they had been originals i would've changed them a lot earlier, and i only replaced them 'cos there was nothing else left to replace.  :'(


Unless you're racing the bike, or you ride and brake like a mental case, then braided lines should be fine for many years.

First thing to check on any Fazer is the output shaft (front sprocket shaft) for signs of welding,makes sprocket changes a PITA.Depends if youre on a budget or really on a budget.I recently sold my Silver boxeye in vgc with a bucket load of extras for £1200 with two barely new Pirelli Corsas.If youre paying around the grand mark i would think there are better bikes available.

Yes I am on the south coast. Thanks for all the advice gents. The bike is in Southampton, could this be your bike gingernuts. Not sure of the number plate but it's in eBay.

78000miles, still going strong...no real problems... apart from a burnt connector under the tank from the ignition
just in the process of a tidy up...pitted forks, soggy shock and some paint.

£1800 for an 11 year old bike with 56k is far too much. That was the first year of the FZS - they got a lot better. Look for an S2, for £500 more you will get a low mileage S2 which is 5 years newer like
