back protectors
#21
I ride with a Forcefield ProSub4 as it felt the best when I was trying them on in the shop.

Don't really know why I feel safer with one on... might just be a placebo effect, but at least that way, I'm not tensing up whilst feeling uncomfortable. Again, this doesn't mean I won't get hurt in an accident.

A friend of mine went over a cars bonnet after someone pulled out on him and was told in hospital that the only reason he didn't have a serious back injury was because of his back protector, as he somersaulted and ended up landing flat on his back. Again, every accident is different, but i'd still rather have it than not.

On a different note, it is quite thick (about 20-25mm) and a little stiff when first put on but when it warms up its much better. As others have said, the jacket inserts can be just bits of soft foam which are next to useless, so i'd consider upgrading it to a Knox / Forcefield / insert well known brand here, one.

any protection is worth wearing i reckon. i was on a ladder safety course and they played a youtube vid of some bloke who had broken his back falling off a ladder. what he wished for most of all, surprisingly, was not so much being able to walk again but the dignity of being able to wipe his own arse etc. quite moving to watch. it should be played in all bikesafe courses.
