FFS! When will these dickheads realise that it's not speed that kills, it's *inappropriate* speed for the conditions.

I've been in conditions where it's pissing down with rain or it's foggy and visibility is seriously reduced (such that I'm doing about 40mph in lane 1 on a motorway) and seen idiots come racing past at 80 mph. If their speed was restricted to 70mph, would it *really* be that safer?

Surely the big car companies have too much clout for this to happen.

I mean who would buy the v10 M5 when flat out it was level peg with a nissan micra.

in a powerful car you could be flat out accelerating during an overtake & just get level with another car when bosh the car would go flat & youd be focced!
Easiest way to go fast........don't buy a blue bike

I see a problem: if all cars were limited to 70, then how would they replace the dosh brought home by speed camera fines??

The UK accident rate compared with France and Germany is meaningless in itself, without knowing comparative traffic volumes, and road mileages for a particular class of road (Germany has a far bigger M-way network than we do, for example).

A report by Thames Valley Road Safety Partnership states that there is next-to-no evidence to prove cameras actually prevent an accident from occuring, and it also states that motorcyclists should have freedom to choose their own speed (eg, to prevent tailgating); shall put link up in a bit.

Interesting read, I quite liked the following section:

Quote:"[...]motorcyclists be free to select the safest speed for each condition and to constantly adjust their speed."

And then this one as well Tongue

Quote:"[...]deaths of motorcyclists fell to their lowest level in 1993 (before speed cameras were introduced) and then rose as the speed camera network expanded[...]"

I'm happy to have speed limiters, speed cameras and the whole kit and caboodle, but please can they wait until we have self driving cars cos I can't be faffed with the monotony of driving like a robot..

Self-driving cars... fantastic technology... complete waste

I drive my car because I WANT TO DRIVE MY CAR. Damn all those moaning commuters who wish they didn't have to drive to work!

Interesting reading.

However, it's nothing to do with the Thames Valley Road Safety Partnership, or any other 'official' body, it's just something that's been knocked up by a member of Joe Public.

Complete waste ? You're certainly entitled to your opinion but the companies spending millions on making it a reality disagree with you.  As do I.

You want to have fun, the future is track days and the race track.  The public road is too important, conjested and delicate to take people driving for pleasure.  Just my opinion.

The point will come, very soon, where exponential population growth will make humans driving a car impractical and to all intents impossible.

Calm down dear Tongue

Obviously its not a complete waste, I assumed that most people would understand that was an exaggeration

Having fun while driving isn't necessarily all about going fast and racing on the roads. What about general exploration and the adventures of exploring some strange new road you've never driven before? If we were confined to only manual driving on tracks then we'd all get pretty bored pretty soon after going around Silverstone for the millionth time :\

I disagree with the latter statement - if we as a race survive long enough for that to become an actual problem I would damn well hope that hover cars or anti-gravity systems were in existence to overcome this problem :lol

ill bet when this does get pushed through, it will be up to us to fork out the money to install the hardware in our cars.

wankers!
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - strawberries in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming - WOO HOO! What a Ride!"

Let's remove the exaggeration and call it a waste.... I'd still disagree with you ;-)

You want to explore places... get a bicycle or a motor bike.  Cars take up too much room and are environmentally unsound when they only contain a single person.  The weekly shop will get delivered anyway... I can see a time when there won't be cars.

Anti gravity ? I can see the day they discover this being the day everything on earth floats in to space or the Earth stops spinning :-P ... and yes that was sarcasm.

Hover cars would be massively impractical, why use energy lifting people off the ground when wheels work so well ?  (Obviously for short distances).  I can see maglev or something like that working but why bother when you have self driving cars which can go in convoy to save fuel and improve aerodynamics whilst eradicating congestion?

It wouldn't do I'd we were all the same, I'm glad that there are people like deadeye who can have their flights of fancy and work to make it a reality.

I believe we were all out on Sunday's ride to have fun? We certainly weren't travelling to work, our destination wasn't a "necessary" use of the road. Is there anyone on this forum who has their bike only and exclusively as a commuter tool?

Just because it's my point of view doesn't mean I won't take advantage of the fact that it isn't like that ?

Sunday....fun...thats certainly one word to describe it.  Gut wrenching and horrible to see Christo trying to soar like an eagle is another.  It certainly made me think about how bad it could have been and if I would prefer to ride solo :-P

It's easy to say that Sunday wasn't fun because of what happened to Christo. But no one knew that was going to happen when we set out, and of course, none of us would have wanted that to happen to any one of us. For all road users, whether car, bike, cyclist or whatever, we all know of the risks involved. But we still use the roads. I think if you read my post again, you'll see what I mean. If you think you're going to get away with accusing me of considering Christo's accident as fun, think again.
It's true though, isn't it? We set out with the intention of enjoying a day's riding for the sake of riding, yourself included?

You missed my point, I was being deliberately pedantic. Its fantastic engineering and a damn good idea but I just loathe the idea that we won't be in control of our driving experience.

As for my exploration point - there are plenty of justifications for using a car over a motorbike. This may be a forum focused on motorcycling but I still love cars and will continue to do so. There's still plenty of road out there that has next to no traffic so its not like congestion is an issue.

Hover cars would be awesome! One of your initial complaints was congestion and traffic - hover cars mean you gain a 3rd dimension of space with minor (if any) requirement of additional infrastructure. I'm thinking of things like scenes from the likes of Fifth Element and Star Wars (not space ships before you try to be a wise-ass). I have optimistic hopes but the reality is we'll probably kill ourselves off before hand...

I guess I'm glad for people like simonm - they make forum boards more interesting over random topics  :lol
