I am not a mechanic but was wondering .Is it possible to tell when an egr valve is open or shut without removing it , wondering if I were to disconnect it when its shut , then took it for a run and it was ok then that would confirm whether the valve was faulty or not . any advice much appreciated .
EGR valve?
Are you talking about on a car or do you mean the EXUP valve on a Yamaha exhaust?

Or do you mean the AIS valve on a gen 2?
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!
If its a car egr valve you're talking about then either buy (ebay) or make a blanking plate. Sometimes the ecu will pick up that its been blanked off and put the engine management light on, sometimes it wont. Either way though as a result you'll know whether the egr valve is knackered or not.
Yes , I was talking about the egr valve on the car , got a new one from vauxparts for £37 , replaced it today , running much better ,didn't feel like it was missing , but sometimes when you decelerate instead of idling at about 750rpm it just drops to 500 rpm and then cuts out , then it struggles to start . Gonna clean the throttle body next , see how that goes then , maybe get a coil pack from scrapper .
Have a look on the web and see if you can disable/remove the egr valve. It puts dirty exhaust gases back through your engine, just what the fresh oxygen needs to burn properly!!! and soot up the engine so it doesn't run properly :\
Mass Air Flow. Sits between the airbox and the intake chamber normally and gets dirty/fails with age.

Thanks to everyone for the advice , got a feeling its the ecu , I was told to test the voltage on the control circuit of the 2 purple relays in the engine compartment - 17v both sides , I had a couple of advisories at the last mot which will probably be expensive , so although she has been a good runner for the last 3 years ,time to get rid before she turns into a money pit .
