Any ideas?
#1
I am new to biking, but have some mechanical knowledge.,. My recently purchased bike has only 14k on it, I have only been out a few times. It has a 'griniding' noise, more noticeable at speed. It isn't constant. Any thoughts on this appreciated. Thanks.

What kind of condition is the bike in? 14k isn't much so as long as it hasn't been abused engine should be ok.

Brakes might need a good clean out, but if it was brakes i'd expect it to be a constant noise. Has the chain been properly lubed and adjusted?

Where abouts is the noise coming from? front, back?

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

The bike is clean. Previous owner kept it on carpet in a heated summer house. He loved the bike but had to give up biking. I doubt it has been abused. It has had plenty of minor services. I would guess it is coming from the middle area of the bike. It is more a grind, bit knocky. I can feel it more through the seat than the handle bars.

I will check the chain out tomorrow.

hmm, not sure mate.

get the front sproket cover off and give it a good clean out behind there too.. If it's got a knock to it then I doubt it's the chain but good to give it a good clean/lube and adjust.

Ye, just had a look, looks very tidy mate.

I guess the other thing to do is clean in about the rear shock/swing arm pivot/dog legs etc and check for anything lose about that kind of area.

Is the noise from the near side and does it go when the clutch leaver is pulled in? If so this normal but may need an oil change or top up. Especially if its been stood.

First guess would be worn or badly adjusted chain, but need a little more info to be honest?

Chris

If it's got a knock to it, it IS the chain, sticky links!

The bike has been stood at my house for six weeks, plus a while at previous owners. Some years he put very few miles on it, I can see that from old MOT's. I had a quick look around this morning and have oiled the chain. It needs a good clean, which I will do. There is a lot of old dirty oil at the front sprocket, so it is possible a seal somewhere around there is failing. I also think it has too much oil in it. If it needs checking when upright the indicator window is full, on centre stand. But if I check it when on the side stand the window shows oil half way. I realise this could be an unrelated issue, but if over filled that could be a problem. Is this right for checking oil level?

Oil level does seem a little too high but it may not be very much if at all as it will depend on how much the bike is leaning over when on its side stand i.e. the ground.  On level ground on the side stand there should be nothing in the window that said I don't believe this is your problem.

You don't say where the noise is coming from but I'll assume it's from the drive system in this case check the following: -

1. The front sprocket is secure i.e. the nut is tight and the condition of the teeth they should be the same shape as the rear, and check the rear for the same.

2. Check the chain look for seized links and/or stretched one's and it's tension/alignment Fazer's are very sensitive to this.

3. Check the rear wheel bearings.

4. Check the condition of the rear disc/pads it's possible the caliper has seized (very common) and one or both pads are down the the backing plate i.e. metal on metal.

i bought a really tidy fazer. the chain and sprockets looked fine, but i was hearing horrendous noises at times. changed chain and sprox, its like a different bike. i think the chain must have stretched. if you have the cash, change them first. go for a ride out with some guys on here and they may be able to advise you some more.

hi MRS, when checking oil alls check on level ground with bike on centre stand and try and keep level on top mark  Smile ....can you hear the grinding noise when standing ? if not almost certain it will be the chain, remove the front sprocket cover and give it a good clean, there be lots of chain lube and s*it in there, check tension and also wheel alignment  Wink ....let us know how you get on  Smile

The oil level should be checked after letting the bike tick over for a few minutes as well.

Just an update.

I have had a full service and it turns out the chain was stretched so that has been changed with the cogs. I haven't really had a chance top give it a run yet, but on the short run home it seemed much improved.
