URGENT: cylinder not firing
#1
Cylinder 1 seems to have given up the ghost... Spark plug and cap seem ok and I can't see any other problem. Was hoping to take it to the IoM tomorrow.

What are the usual suspects (apart from the plug and HT leads)?

Cheers, S

closed up valve clearances? blocked carb jets? no fuel in the carb? split diaphragm? main jet fell off?

Define 'seem OK'. Smile

Have you swapped #1 plug to another cylinder fed from the other coil?

Coils provide a lost spark to the non-compressed cylinder on their pair so it's unlikely to be a coil problem.

If you're 100% sure it's not the plug or cap (you have trimmed 1/2" off the plug wire and re-attached it to the cap, yes?) then suspect over-filled float bowl #1 carb.  Likely cause would be failed float needle seat O-ring.  That's a carbs oot job, of course, so hopefully it's plug/lead/cap related.

Hope you get it sorted quickly.

big thanks for your replies... i'll have to sort it when i get back, sad as i was looking forward to taking it round the IoM.

i had the carbs out recently to change the throttle cables, so maybe i 'did' something then thats caused this? carbs are are a dark art to me so i may be taking it to a garage to sort...

bike was working perfect this morning - happened on the way home; seemed fine when opening the throttle but struggled / stuttered when trying to hold a constant speed.

Just a thought, if carbs have been out I would start looking at that. Maybe even give them a tap with a rubber hammer or end of a screwdriver first incase something is just stuck where they were disturbed.
But its even money on it being related to recent work done.

Wouldn't that affect two cylinders and not just one? And why would the bike work ok for 80odd miles before going wrong? Will look in to it when I get back, starting with the carbs...
On the IoM now, riding the KTM - any foccers here as well?

Back from tha Isle of Man and went to start the FZS to take to a local garage... And it fired up just fine. Took it in anyway and was told, apart from a bit of gunk in the carbs, all was fine. Carbs cleaned now and all is well.

For anyone who's interested the Marshall riders on the Isle of Man were on FZ1s this year as well as the usual R1s - if someone can remind me how to post a pic on here I'll post a pic of it...

Click REPLY as if doing a normal post.
When the box appears click ADDITIONAL OPTIONS. When that drops down, click the CHOOSE FILE button which will open a dialog box for you to find the pic on your computer (if you've already transferred it from your camera/phone) or directly from your camera/phone if it's connected to your pc.
The fact that you can, doesn't always mean you should.

I NEVER watch Emergency Bikers for the emergencies...

Marshall's Fazer at the TT this year, apologies for the rubbish photo taken on my two year old HTC - bike was all pretty standard but for the Akropovic exhaust and Hyperpro steering damper (just visible under the clutch lever).
