It's time to start getting my 2004 Gen1 sorted for the summer again.
Sorry if this has been done to death already!
Had the bike from new, and have always fitted OE pads.
But the last time I fitted a new set it was about 70 quid, and I doubt it's got any better.
So what's the best third party option? What feels nearest to the excellent OE pads (anybody know who the OE maker is?) without eating my OE discs which still have plenty of life left in em.
Personally I would go with EBC HH pads, its what I've got in mine and the brakes are brill. Several others have mentioned SBS (I think) pads and given them the thumbs up as well. I'm sure others will have an opinon on this subject, if you do a search for pads on here I'm sure you will find lots of info and opinions. Hope this helps

I use the ebc as well no problems with them.
Was in the dealer for an oil filter etc.
Asked about pads. It was 74 quid for a set of Yamaha pads. I told em that was nuts, they didn't disagree.
He offered them to me for 50 quid, just to get rid of em cos they can't shift the OE pads anymore and just want em off the shelf.
So I've got another set of the OE ones. Next time round I'll get the EBC ones. Oh I take the organic EBC ones are not the greatest?
the premier Yamaha dealer in England ( alf england of bedworth ) only fit EBC HH now, as nobody will stump up for OE pads. If you got them for £50, tbh thats not bad.
I just bought a set of EBC HH fronts from HG for £33 delivered.
There are two different kinds of EBC HH pads for Gen1, FA252HH and EPFA252HH. EP supposedly stands for Extreme Performance, and price doubles :eek
Anyone tried EPFA-HH pads, how do they compare to FA-HH?
Did a brake fluid change and a wash yesterday, and had a noticeable reduction in braking power. I don't believe I sloshed around so much fluid as to get it on the pads, so I attributed it to moisture or something, but just in case I am preparing for a pad change.
Just fitted Goldfren HH. Half the price of EBC and just as effective. Can't comment on wear yet
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
I am on my second set of Goldfren HH pads, the original Yam ones lasted about 8,000 miles but one pad was worn in each calliper (pistons were moving out ok but one not returning fully). Goldfren's lasted about 7,000 miles, I know some people slate them but I have never had a problem with braking and I would rather the pads wore out (cheap on eBay) not the discs.
And to come back to the ancient question: organic or sintered? Guy at the counter convinced me to buy organics, saying that it's better to wear pads than discs, and that on road and in less than 10/10 track riding any benefits from sintereds are insignificant, but now I'm having second thoughts.
OEMs are organic, I think, while sintered are cool (as in 8) ), but do they offer more bite and feel? I know that they dissipate heat better so they aren't as likely to fade in hard use, but that's fairly irrelevent for me. But if there's more braking performance, I'd be willing to give sintereds a shot and start saving for new discs.
Any experiences?
EBC HH pads in mine, tho they 'rattle' a little in the callipers they work fine.

AP racing on mine - very good.
Organic in the back, sintered up front. AP racing pads warm up quickly and are gentle to the discs, but not perfect for hard track days (Carbon Loraine excel in that department). However, never had problems with AP, no matter how hard I pushed.
Most things done in a hurry need to be done again - patiently.
