Been Quoted for an engine replacement... Helpp !

Hi guys, I've been quoted £250 max for an engine replacement that's with me, obviously providing the engine, oil, oil filter and spark plugs.
Does this sound reasonable or shall I carry on looking for cheaper ?


The mechanic says it's an all day job but I was under the understanding (just guessing really) like 5 hours at most if all goes to plan, which at his standard rate of £30 P/H would be around the £150 mark.


Has anyone actually replaced an engine on the fazer and would be able to tell me how many hours labour it took you, Obviously from taking the old one out, Putting replacement in so she runs..

I think its a fair price to be honest.


He might of priced it at £250 max to cover himself as he doesn't know yet if he's going to encounter seized exhaust nuts and other time consuming things that might crop up.

There are no seized exhaust studs as I have taken the exhaust off altogether to give it a clean and polish up so that wouldn't be a problem.


I was going to let one of my mates fit my engine as he previously used to work in a motorbike garage but i want documented proof that it's been fitted if you get me. Just for when i come to sell it really.

I've done it a couple of times. Singlehanded.
Allow two days if you're thinking of saving the cash and doing it on your own!

You see i would do it myself but don't really have that much knowlege in that sort of area. Well atleast i know the mechanic wasn't trying to have me on there

If you have a Haynes manual and a fairly decent tool kit, you can do it yourself, just follow the instructions step by step, take your time and if need be use a digital camera to take pics of things like wiring routing and pipes etc. Just need a mate to help actually remove the engine from the frame, but you will have just saved £250!! Its only nuts and bolts at the end of the day, just take your time, another tip would be to label any wiring you have to disconnect. give it a go :b

£150/£180 if all the exhaust studs are loose, its 4-5 hrs if the bloke has never done a fazer engine before he will take longer, i think Deefer can do it in his sleep now.  they come out of the frame a certain way easily and a certain way a pig.

I never though of using a haynes manual :O I suppose it could be worth a go at attempting my self. At the end of the day, If I f*ck up then the local mechanic is still there to pick up the pieces lol Although my tool situation isn't that great. i have a few bits and bobs but weather I have the right things I don't know :/

it is quite involved and he may be underselling his time. I paid £150 for a mate to do it on much better rates than you will get. It is a longer job than you would think.

Lumpy - its what deefer does for a living, 75% of the bikes he works on are fazers, hence he knows how to get them out as easily as possible, but there are always difficulties with the exhaust studs mostly, so the fact that kinggy knows his are loose helps.  anyway if you need him he is just outside Thrapston on he A14

Oh mine are definatly loose seeing as i have the exhaust sat in my house waiting till i can be bothered to clean it up So hopefully that'll be a lot of help.


I just sprayed on some chain lube, left for about 10 mins came back and came right off no problems

Cool, I stayed at Thrapston service when on  way to Hunstanton for a RiDE photo shoot. The point I was badly making is that £250 is a good rate as my mate charged me £150 which doesn't even cover his time. I was lucky and got the engine for £150 too.

I would still have a go yourself if youv'e got enough spare time. Its a good feeling of satisfaction once its all done and dusted, youve saved money and reformed the bond between man and machine!

Yes, very true, I bought a 600 bandit stolen recovered for £100, broke it up and made £1500 profit. Easy money  :lol
