exup valve siezed
#1
well my exup valve is completly siezed, and someone has removed the pulley and locked it up with a nut as a spacer,i will also need a new cable as one of them is starting to frey, and to make things worse all the bolts on the exup valve have rotted away so it will be a grinder to remove, and all the nuts that hold the downpipes to the head are very rusty,it is a gauranteed case of brute force with some broken studs to boot, and the rear mount for the exhaust looks broke as well,so i think my best route is a replacement downpipes with exup valve, and i will need to remove the radiator to give some more space so loads of work, lucky i did not plan to put the bike back on the road now isnt it

i have now managed to get the exup valve out,i have just purchased a good set of downpipes off ebay and all the bolt holes look good,i have some stainless bolts so they will be going on,the fun has only just bagan though as i do not think any of the exhaust to head nuts will come off so i will have to try and get my dremel on them,im annoyed as i missed out on a good exup valve for £30 with all the bits i need

welcome to fazer thousand ownership. most of us will have an exup story....

my header nuts all looked corroded but they all came undone without any problems at all. i re-used all eight in fact, so you never know....

the downpipes must be stainless because i attacked mine first with wet'n'dry then compounds while they were off and they came up just like brand new. they've stayed that way too, so it's well worth the effort.

good luck.
is it clean enough?

The dealer is probably the quickest way, but most expensive. You could try look around for a local bike scrap yard. The fleabay is probably the cheapest way, but it might take ages to come up for sale. I have seen the downpipes with working exup for about £120 iirc, but that was a good few months ago.

I have replaced the pulley that I bought from the dealer as mine was falling apart, but it works now.

The front pipes from the 5PW R1 (2003 fuel injected model) can be made to fit, there also made from Ti should give some good weight savings too.
I think there was a post on the FZ1OA forum a few years ago about this ?  I have a friend who is fitting a set at the moment, IF I get a chance I will take some pics & post them up.

Good luck fitting the 5PW headers on a Gen 1.  Smile

The EXUP valve is totally different, too.

If your mate can get this to work, I'd love to see the photos.  However, I think maybe he's been mislead by some posts on the FZ1OA forum by folks who've fitted the titanium end can off the 5PW.

No Mike it was the thread by that crazy Greek (PIR I think ?) fella that has inspired him to do this!

I was over at his place yesterday he has the front pipes & can fitted allready.
He's used a can & link pipe off of a 4XV/5JJ R1 which kind of looks odd & O.K in a strange way ?
He seems to think it will run O.K or exactly the same due to the EXUP valve opening up at the same time as it would with the old headers (the EXUP valves are stacked instead of being side by side on the 5PW). Im not 100% certain on all of this as I recall Ivan mentioning something about the length of the headers being quite crucial on these engines ?

Anyhows IF I remember I will take my camera with me next time im over there,  & i'll put some pics up of what it looks like and also what was required to fit them (He did not have to make a new front engine mount).

Chitsu.

P.S SORRY ABOUT THE THREAD HIJACK solorider  :\
