New Owner Headlight Q
#1
Lightbulb
Hello everyone ,
New Fazer owner here. Looking at doing a headlight upgrade and although there's plenty already on here about this I just have a quick Q.
Considering each side (Dipped and full ) work I dependently of each other, when I do the mod to make them both come on at the same time, will I have a full beam on the whole time ? Obviously this would cause issues. Or are there bulbs I can buy before that can work together but alternative between full/dipped. I have attached pics of current bulbs and a few of the bike for anyone Interested. Many thanks to the reedits lads for directing me here too. I'm sure they're all here too.  Thanks

Do a search for "Dual Headlamp modification" and you'll find several ways of doing this.

When you do the mod, you are enabling the low beam on the right hand side (as you sit on the bike) so both lights come on.
When you select high beam on the LHS switch gear, as it does now, the LHS bulb stays on and the RHS one switches from low to high beam.

And is this with the bulbs in it at the moment or with upgraded bulbs when I do the mod. Thanks

Yes, with the standard H1 on the LHS and the standard H4 on the RHS

There are new Led bulbs called Nano Led available from a company called Ledperf and they fit straight in with out modification.
I have fitted these to my Foxeye 600 and 1000 and make a huge difference to night riding. Only thing i had to do was tighten the connections to the bulb
They should be better than the candles in brown bottles the Boxeye.
It will will help in the charging as these use half the current of the standard H1 and H4 and the charging system on the boxeye is not excellent its strong point.

I can't confirm this, but I read recently that people have had problems with the reg/rec failing when they replaced standard incandescent bulbs with LEDs because they draw less current.

Great thanks

Maybe someone can confirm that on here

I saw that also, but it was more an opinion not fact.
Technically the reg/rect may run a little hotter, but it is rated at 18A so well within its limits and you are still pulling 6 to 8 amps with the lights on when riding.
It allows a bit more in reserve for extra like spotlight and heated grips.
Extras can put a boxeye under pressure to charge the battery in city riding, but with LEDs it would be less of a problem.
My 600 and 1000 have covered over 4000 miles each since fitting them and I have never noticed the reg/rect running any hotter on either.
It is easy to check because of its location.

I cannot see how this would be a problem as riding without your lights on, which many people do for some strange reason, would draw even less current.

I think the point they were making was that the Rect/Reg would have to shunt more current as it is not possible to reduce the flow from the Stator.
The regulator shunts the extra current that is not required to ground and the byproduct here is heat and for that reason there is a large heat sink as that heat has to be dissipated.
Since as I mentioned it is rated 18amps and it has a large heatsink it is not a problem.
As you say it would have to shunt the extra with the lights off and running LEDs or Halogen bulbs is reducing the shunt current, making the opinion sound more like scare mongering. Maybe it was said with the best on intentions, or the person does not understand the working of a regulator.

The Suzukis in the late 70 and 80s used to burn out rect/reg regularly. The reason was, Suzuki had underspeced the Rect/Reg and the heat sink was not big enough to dissipate the heat, if you upgraded the regulator or ran with lights on all the time there was no problem.

Go quality LED and don't do the mod.  Remember and as you've mentioned each lens works independently i.e left is low and right is high, the reflectors are for those beam patterns only. If you wire the high beam on all the time you will dazzle on coming traffic even with only the low beam element of the H4 bulb on, you'll have to lower the reflector. Which will mean your high beam will be less effective and it's already not the best.

The real issues with the boxeye headlights is the crap reflectors.  Fitting quality LEDs and not doing the mod will still give you a huge improvement.  Thumbup

I think you are referring to the FZ6, the FZS600 lights are different with a H7 bulb(I think) on the left and a H4 bulb on the right.
The left dim is always on when you switch on the lights.
The problem is the the dim filament of the H4 is left unused and unwired.
There were two modification one correct with a bit involved in doing it and the second quick and easy, but most definitely not recommended.
With the correct modification the left dims and H4 Dim filament would come on when the lights were switched on.
Now when switched to the headlight the dim filiaent of the H4 would go off and the headlight filament would come on.
Unfortunately it has been so long ago since I did  the modification I can only vagely remember what I did.

Maybe some one on here can remember or has it done and can help, in the meanwhile I will look through my computer and documents to see if I have a copy of it

No I'm not referring to the FZ6. The high beam is H4 the low is H1. The mod turns on the low beam element of the H4 bulb. The bulbs aren't the problem as mentioned the reflectors are.

I could not remember whether it was a H1 or H7 and Yes the reflectors are rubbish, but doing the correct modification is bound to be an improvement and is like having two candles in two brown bottels in a dark room rather than one  candle in one brown bottle in the same dark room. Regardless of how bad the reflectors are, two brighter LED bulbs in Dim mode are going to be better than one.

After a bit of searching I found the modification and it is still on the web site

No.  LEDs produce a lot more light, turning a poor reflector into a reasonable one. Better still do a projector lens conversion with LEDs.  Headlights are the biggest weakness of the boxeye, why Yamaha chose to fit H1/H4 high beam only is a mystery, the 400 has 2 H4s in both lenses, they work at the same time for low/high beam.
