I have got a stiff one

Chain link that is.I can feel it and hear it when the chain is under a low load at about 40mph, not coasting nor can I feel it under any decent load.I am not quite ready for a new chain and sprocket set so what is my best course of action-- slacken off wheel and set to work on the misbehaving link with two pairs of pliers and some engine oil ?.I did previously tighten the chain a tiny fraction so 95% of the chain positions would just touch the guide but then there is that one tight spot with the stiff link that is a little too tight. Should I adjust the chain to that one tight area and have the rest perhaps a little too slack like all the guides actually tell you to do  :lol :deal .

Is this the original chain?
More people are born because of alcohol than will ever die from it.

Is it the rivet link thats tight. If it is, id be inclined to replace it. If not, try working at it

Yes -20k miles - I know its getting ready for a new set but the sprockets still look ok to me.

I have just been all round the chain slackened it right off to start and checked each one and there are more stiff ones than I thought - not super stiff but not so loose so that I can bend the links with my fingers if you know what I mean none were that bad but they all feel free now. But I still have a tight spot in the chain, must have an oval rear sprocket.
I did check the alignment with the two lines method a few months back and found the swingarm markings to be correct.

its the OEM chain from new so don't think it has one

Correction - its done 21600mls.Well the test ride showed a small improvement but still there at 40 mph 4k revs in 4the gear and 3k revs at 40 in 5th but only if I hold at that speed. I don't feel anything upto or over 40.
Now here's the reason I do not like scot oilers after using engine oil to work into the links

I doubt very much it will improve in my humble opinion, and 20 years out of a chain and sprockets ain't too bad.
Maybe you can save up and buy it a new kit for Xmas.  :lol

I get the yearage but not the mileage. Still don't get how a chain and sprocket set can wear so that you end up with a tight spot, all links are now free of tight links in themselves and yet I have a tight spot that I can feel passing over the sprocket or under it.
Its not the money so much as the time because I will be using a continuous chain so that is -- swing arm off but at least that gives me an opportunity to re grease all linkages but while the sun is shining ----- :faz :woot

Just fit a split link chain.  Save you taking the swing arm out.
And fit a Scottoiler - saves you getting tight spots.  Big Grin
