Another Shorty on a Fazer (exhaust that is)

Now in possession of a new Carbon fibre / Titanium 230mm exhaust - GP Style. From Black Widow.
To replace the standard 500mm Yamaha bazooka! :eek Should see (and hear) quite an improvement!

The 230mm Titanium is not as "fat" at the 200mm Shorty (I inspected both side by side). Slimmer, but a fraction longer.

The weight difference however between the two is substantial. The 200 is a good deal heavier, being stainless steel, compared to the lighter Titanium (0.95kg).
I understand its going to sound roughly as loud as the 200, having approx the same internal cubic area. Also fitted with removable DB Killer. :evil

The Slash tip I'm told can develop that 'titanium burnt blue' colour, which is infact due to a chemical reaction between the exhaust gases/titanium.
(compared to 'unnamed' exhaust cans that have been artificially coloured to simulate that look). Pointless fun fact.

Regardless of whatever anyone says, a carb balance will give you best results with any aftermarket end can.
I have a Moto GP can on mine and for pure fun value i decided for the 2nd time to try it out without the baffle in.
Sound wise, ridiculously awesome, it made ME grin, but at the same time i felt a tad embarrassed by the unwanted looks from bemused people and barking dogs about 100 metres ahead of me, but the bike itself at lower speeds ran a bit ropey to say the least no doubt due to a lack of back pressure.
A carb balance would sort things out but as you can probably tell i'm a bit shy and the excess attention didn't really appeal to me too much, plus the noise was just annoying. A motorway run would give me a proper headache, and if i rode anywhere out of London i would forgive anyone trying to assassinate me for a simple breach of the peace.

Different bike I know but I have a scorpion serkit on my 8 and run with the db killer in.
With it out it sounds great but the lack of back pressure creates a loss of low end torque but it's cleaner and smoother above 6k.
As for sound, from my perspective without the db killer it howls but the wife said she can't hear it from the house or when I passed her car at 'legal speeds'. Friends following have said that it's loud but but not offensive.

Without the baffle in, mine's offensive to me, my neighbours, and anyone else who hears me approaching from a distance.
It's unwanted attention so not in anyones favour to be honest.

Agreed ^ . The Can is fitted. Not had an opportunity to ride, however just revving it a little and the sound is substantially louder (it barks  :lol ). Noticeably lower/deeper growl idling too. Certainly more road presence.



The db killer will likely NOT be coming out (not wanting to attract unwanted attention).

Same sort of exhaust by the looks of things.


It'll sound totally different, but according to my Dyno mechanic you'll never beat the original stock exhaust for best performance.
I just don't like the sound of them, they're a bit too quiet for me.

True - the factory stock setup, all components are put together to operate in harmony.
Anything swapped out from that "safe" configuration, can have knock on effects.

When you say best performance, by deviating from the stock silencer, do you mean efficiency (fuel consumption - mpg) / or acceleration (performance)? A more free flowing exhaust still has benefits?

Car engines are usually "restricted" from factory, to suit the majority of the buying public. Restricted via their firmware/software maps (ECU). People remap them, to get a bit more performance out of the engine (which can actually also increase mpg).

We don't have any equivalent capabilities with the Fazer?

I suppose my main reasons for this change, was the increased noise (more road presence = SAFETY) plus cosmetics to compliment the Naked styling, losing that big long 1/2 metre cylinder for a much more sporty, compact unit. I'm not maintaining this bike to look like it just rolled off the production line.

factory ecu setup has lots of restrictions they have to adhere too and a remap can increase mpg but it will not comply to the other regulations (probably emmisions) after a remap - car manufacturers use mpg as a major selling point nowadays so they wouldnt give less mpg without a good reason (unless there is a global conspiracy by the CIA, NSA and MI-5 which edward snowden forgot to tell us about)


dont get me wrong i love remaps though, stock vw t4 2.5tdi 102bhp VS pendle performance remap 135bhp 250ft.lbs  (just dont tell MI-5)

I remapped (took to a specialist) a SEAT Leon FR (diesel - 170 TD) which gave decent performance gains after the job was done (took it over 200bhp). It was addictive.
UNTIL it went in to SEAT for a regular service, then while connecting it to their "computer" they performed an ECU update (to ensure car was up-to-date) and wiped my Remap! I was adamant it was running "slower" after it came out.


First ride this morning after fitting the exhaust. Definitely louder, but I wouldn't say its excessive (over the noise of the traffic).
Revving, and hard on the throttle, yes, you do hear it much more - also a bit of popping under heavy engine braking.

Would say though, that riding off from home at a relatively quiet 7am, it probably did attract some attention from the neighbours! :rolleyes
