Avon storm 170/60ZR17 on a Gen 1 thou?
#1
i know that the standard size rear tyre for the Gen 1 is 180/55ZR17 but now that my Fazer is back up and running, the tyres are getting past their best. (If I've got the sizes the wrong way around apologies).

I've a fairly new set of Avon storms in the garage and was wondering what the collective knowledge could tell me about fitting them to the Gen 1 please?

The front is the same size, so it's really only the effects of fitting a 170/60 to the rear that I'm enquiring about.

Any thoughts appreciated. It will be used through the winter for odd jaunts out and possibly a track day next year.

Personally I would not fit it. Sell it and buy the correct fitment.

Hmm. You're probably right.
Anybody had any experience of Avon storms ( correct figments) on a Gan 1?
Good / bad / indifferent?

Fitting a tyre that's 10mm narrower than the rim is designed for sounds pretty unsafe to me, not something that I would contemplate. Should the worse happen and the seal break whilst you're on the bike and you come off, the incorrect tyre fitment would probably give your insurance sufficient grounds for not paying out. Just not worth it IMHO.

I'm a big fan of Avon Storms, for my riding style they are much better than the equivalent Bridgestone's offering plenty of confidence in the corners and giving about 10% more life.

Okay guys, thanks for the feedback. I'll buy a new rear Avon to match the correct size front.

we used to fit 170's to fireblades for racing. made them easier to turn but the trade off was a flatter profile so running off the edge was a problem on the limit............not something you'd notice in winter
The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money!
