Have a 46ltr myself fits 2 crash hats inside or plenty nik naks when touring on a removable plate system, at end of day you can only carry a limited amount of weight if you choose 52ltr or 46ltr,,have many times had a hefty amount in the 46ltr well over the recommended weight limit of the rack ,but do best to keep weight down as it makes front end of bike lighter,so this an exmple of size is not always better, just go for what suits your own personal needs. and put heavier items into tank bag or panniers

45l is smallest to hold 2 full-face helmets - or mine used to take my helmet and jacket, plus a couple of small items. 52 is humungous, but as mhowse said, they are weight-limited - only supposed to carry 5kgs or something daft. I've overloaded em before and not had problems, but darrsi has been overtaken by his (must've been yellow  :rolleyes) due to overloading, so it does happen.

For camping trips, I used to put clothing and other lightweight stuff in mine, and put all the heavy gear on the pillion seat.
