Cheapo travelling.
#1
I've done a bit of foreign travelling by bike but it always ends up costing me a fortune in petrol, had a bit of a 'revelation' last year in India by buying a 220cc bike and touring with that.
400kms between fill ups was a pleasant surprise and kept the cost of journey down to a minimum but now I've taken a 'bite' of the cheapo apple I'm wondering if I can go cheaper?

The rough idea is to get to Africa by the cheapest means possible so I've been looking at mopeds, more specific, a Honda C90  :rollin
I know its been done before and I'm not trying to break new ground here, just looking for other potential candidates rather than a Cub?

It MUST be -
1. Reliable.
2. Economical.
3. Easy to work on.
4. Be able to carry a whole pile of stuff.
5. Be reasonably comfortable.
6. Easy to pick back up.

Does anybody have any other moped suggestions that fulfil the criteria?

This is my reference  :b

As a C90 owner I reckon that you can't beat em, so long as your happy to cruise at around 45 mph, which for me is a great speed to take the sights in.
Did 1000 miles in 22hrs 23min in May last year on mine with a top speed of over 60  Big Grin  You will need an extra fuel tank as the 90 will only do around 100 between stops.
I put a big one on mine for the 1000 attempt.

100 between stops  :eek I was expecting more like 200-250 miles per tank...

Doing 45-50mph doesn't bother me at all, like you said, more chance to take in the sights  Smile

I'm wondering if a CG125 might also be a good candidate?

Tank is only 3.5 ltr that's why loads of 90 owners put an extra tank on em.
CG 125 will also do the job but I'd think the 90 would be easier to get parts for if needed also easier to load up.
Great C90 site

That's a bit diddy, looks like a plaggy 5l jerry can or a couple of 2l fizzy drink bottles will be a companion  Smile

There was an article in ride a couple of years ago about a chap in his sixties who rode from the Uk to Damascus on a Honda 250 ( great article ).

A CBF 125! Over 100 MPG, 70MPH+ top speed, Its comfy, its light, it can carry a load of stuff and its the UK's biggest selling bike (and many other countries too). Very easy to work on. Loads of after market stuff available if required. Parts are cheap.

I have done over 15000 miles on one from new and I use her every day, and love it. I take it to work over a Yamaha YZF 1000 Thunderace, FZS 600 Fazer and SAAB 9-3 Aero 2L Turbo.

And you can pop wheelies and do stoppies easy  Big Grin
Not quite sure what to do with my early mid-life crisis. Ideas on a post card to P.O.BOX 150...

If you want bigger and comfier, the XL125 is good. Down to 90mpg, but it'll take loads, and the v twin is nice and torquey.

I had a Suzuki GN 125. Similar experience like those CBF125.  2.2 l per 100 km, 10 litre tank. Cheap to run, simple to repair, reliable. No problems if you drop it - unlike Fazer, wher you get most fairing broken etc. This you just straighten mirrors and off you go. Smile
Most things done in a hurry need to be done again - patiently.
